I don’t think we will attack Iran, at least not in the near future. From what I understand there are some real issues with an attack on Iran. First, who will do it? We probably would not get much outside support and we have our hands full already. My understanding is that an air strike on Iran is not a viable option either because the sites are deep in Iran, very dispersed, built in heavily populated areas, and hardened so that means a ground offensive. Just don’t see it.
I don’t believe the load of crap coming out of Iran about needing power etc and believe we have to do all we can to keep them from acquiring that technology. Do you ever wonder if WW III has already started?
Surprisingly, I read a BBC report on an online survey that they did, and the “Persian” (read, Iran) share of what populations across the world think of the U.S. was 51% favorable versus 49% unfavorable. ALL the rest of the various populations (except the Poles) held an unfavorable view of us, right now.
That still doesn’t mean I wouldn’t hesitate to radiate the shit out of 'em if we caught 'em pulling some shit on us

I have a very good friend who was born in Iran (he moved in '79: he was 5) who finally visited his family in '02: He said most young people want to be westernized and capitalist and are just waiting for the hardcore clergy (now all 50+) to die off and go away. Even though they love Metallica, the last thing they want is overt help or influence from the U.S. (or from anyone, really).
Attacking will not help anything: Iran is mostly sane and hopeful, but very scared of the U.S. which is precisely why some there want a nuke (still years away). We would do a lot better to keep an eye on everyone but concentrate on the not-very-secured nukes in the former USSR: There are thousands there vs. a couple (controlled by the state) in No. Korea & Pakistan and maybe someday in Iran.
