So what’s the breakdown of who will /won’t pay?
The only good news is that many people are not smart enough to understand that they are net tax receivers (not payers).
Meaning; in this last election the actual numbers and substance of the issues were irrelevant. People voted on platitude and promises.
If all people were smart enough to know how their personal finances were effected by elections, that 50% mentioned above would continue to vote for socialism indefinitely and we would be screwed. Perhaps never being able to get back into a more performance or incentive based economy on balance.
However, when people see that the Messiah is just a “misguided spend and tax liberal” and not the savior of the world, they will easily be persuaded to vote the other way next election (once again for Hope and Change, etc).
So, the moral is even though in theory once we hit the “50% are receivers point” we are locked into a european type socialist quagmire. Most people here vote from emotion not intelligence. So maybe the pendulum will shift back and we can comeback from all this Pork of Change and Stimulus of Hope etc.

Just out of interest, if you were to sum up all the taxes paid by the banks over the last “x” years, and compare it to the bailout number - how many years have the banks now gone without paying tax?

Sounds like your question requries a different thread…we are talking on individal income taxes on this one. Once this bill is enacted, greater then 50% of all Americans will pay ZERO federal taxes…does that not just boggle your mind?
The question is, will this inspire the republicans to prop up some good fiscal conservatives, or will they exploit this opportunity to push forth the uber religious know-nothing faction of the party (ie Palin) under the guise of “fiscal conservatism.”
I think the former will truly be better for the country, but anticipate that latter.
Lets hope the current voting of the House and Congress republicans are a taste of things to come.

According to the IRS, the bottom 50% of tax payers currently account for 4% of tax revenue. I’m not saying it’s good, but it’s not that big a change really.
These numbers are a few years old but the picture hasn’t changes much.
top 25% pay nearly 83%
top 10% pay 65%.
top 1% pay almost 35%
top 400 Americans paid 1.58%
