I used to play. I switched to triathlons because my knees couldn’t take the beating from ultimate. Played for 4 years at Georgia Tech. Where did you play? I miss playing but my body isn’t built for it.
“We don’t fit the hippie-stoner stereotype at all”
BS. I run past the Carleton Ultimate team several times a week, and this statement is entirely false. I couldn’t imagine a group who MORE fits such a description.
Played all the time in college. It was the swim teams preferred method of cross training in the off season. Aweesome sport!
I once say two guys playing “catch” with a disc on a football field. They were each standing beyond the uprights and throwing it between both of them. Looked like 140+ yards. Something about a perfectly thrown disc that is beautiful!!!
Ever see the disc competitions, where people throw it, and then run and catch it? Crazy stuff!

Well leave to fox to be leading edge and only 25 years late in their statement. I’ve played Ultimate since about 1980 and have to say that of all the people I have met and played against, hippies are probably the most underrepresented group. When I lived in Philly I played in PADA and there were 0 hippies. In fact I think there were more docs than anything else. Ultimate is really a family thing in my experience, and in Philly the league even owned a house next to the fields for BBQs etc. It was unbelievably organized and competitive. Not to say that there weren’t beers and brats involved but I’m pretty sure I didn’t see a 5’ hookah on the side of the field.
Heck I’ve even played in Boulder on and off for several years and most of the folks are fairly hardcore athletes who are looking for some speedwork or cross training - few if any hippies. The problem is that Ultimate requires a lot of running, fast, and that is something that usually doesn’t go hand in hand with your typical hippie. Now disc golf, well…
That was my experience also. I played in the late 80’s and 90’s for Michigan State and local club teams.
I played a Michigan State and for my local team - Grand Haven Beach Ultimate. We made it to the final game of Poultry Days a few times in the early 90’s.
It’s a good pure sport. I played occasionally on my brother’s team in the late 70’s-early 80’s in Seattle. Bill Nye the Science Guy was on the team. Back then Wham-o sponsored the Frisbee World Championships and I qualified and competed one year. Was definately a hippie thing then. Some of the best tournaments I played at were in Santa Barbara and San Francisco at Speedway Park. It’s amazing to think that the sport is old enough that some of the frisbee pioneers have already died. Like Steady Ed Hedrick, who died 3 years ago and had his ashes made into flying discs!
My college swim team also played a lot of ultimate. It was the only intramural sport that fell outside of our season. We had won the intramural title many times in a row.
There’s a pick-up game every Wednesday evening around here. It’s pretty mello but still fun. I do miss playing with people who are really skilled with the disc.
As for the hippies… I played in a city league where there were some hippie types. I really thought they’d be slow and non-competitive. I was wrong. These hippies could fly… and throw. It was humbling. Never underestimate a hippie, they like it that way.
