Pre season is finished, my favorite team finally signed their best player ( blue jackets) and I just spent the weekend out of town with my son while his team took second at their pre season tourney. He is bantam now and first year of full contact. A little stressful when he takes a big check. 4 to 5 nights / days a week at the rink and don’t mind it a bit. What a great way to spend quality time with my son, no video games, no tv, just competition and hanging out time. Life is good !

Ah yes how I remember this time of year, my stepson played JrB His last year they were one win from going to the Eastern Ontario finals but lost a heart breaker in OT. The driving was a pain but I do miss it. Hope the Jackets do better this year I’ve always been a bit of a fan. And we’ll see how my hapless Leafs do this year, I give them 10 games, if they don’t start well Carlyle will be gone.

He just cut Orr and McClaren and you know that he didn’t want to do that. They’ve basically cut his balls off. He’s a sitting duck at this point.
Enjoy that Bantam, it goes insanely quick. I tried to never miss anything with my crew and I have some great memories with them.
Go Blueshirts!!!
Woo Hoo!

They’re still going all the way! Go Leafs go!
Yea, strange situation with new front office and keeping the coach. I can’t see him surviving unless they get off to a great start.
Can someone give me a quick primer on it? It’s like soccer on ice with sticks instead of feet, right?
I have a partial season ticket to the Predators. Luckily it’s in the all you can drink and eat party section.

Kind of like soccer but 100 times faster and incredibly physical. Best sport to watch live, tough to watch on tv unless in hd.
Very simple game. 3 zones. Defense, neutral and offense. Puck has to enter the offensive zone before any offense player. Game of constant motion, kind of like basketball in that regard. Penalties result in player taken off the ice so team plays with less players for duration Of penalty. Full contact sport but only allowed to hit the person that has the puck.

He forgot one. Always bet on the team the Blue Jackets are playing. ![]()
A couple people I work with are season ticket holders. It is almost sad listening to them hope that this year will be different.
It is a little like soccer in that you try to score goals into a net. The ice is much smaller than a soccer pitch, and skating is faster so the game is a little faster, more congested and occasionally a little more violent.
Some key rules that are different from soccer:
Face off - the start of a play or after certain infractions two players stand in front of each other and the ref drops the puck between them. A Little like a jump ball in Baskeball.
Power play - when a penalty is committed a player is (typically) sent off for 2 or 5 minutes. The other team has a numerical advantage called a Powerplay.
Offside - if a player on the attacking team enters the offensive zone before the puck, unless the puck is sent or carried there by a defending player. When an offside violation occurs, a linesman will stop play. A faceoff is then held at a neutral ice spot closest to the infraction to restart play.
Stanley Cup - the NHL’s championship trophy. Winning ‘The Cup’ is the goal of every NHL player & team. The Montreal Canadiens have won the cup 24 times in their storied history. Coincidentally, this is also why Canadian beer come in cases of 24. The Montreal Canadiens (a.k.a. Habs) are a popular team with people who are good lookin’ and smart. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the cup 13 times and are popular with people who are masochistic, enjoy spring time golf and generally are what we call ‘developmentally delayed’.
Icing - It occurs when a player shoots the puck across both the center red line and the opposing team’s goal line, and the puck remains untouched.

You aren’t kidding. Love to watch but even better is the time spent with my son. He is in travel league so the drive time is good quality father son time.
The quality of hockey is quite good also.

Oh yeah? Try 47 years…lol
Thanks for this. I used to watch when I was in college. My mom is a fan, she loves all Boston sports, and I’ve been thinking about getting back into it.
Bruins for me until Seattle gets a team.
Sorry I just can’t get into hockey any more. My team years ago used to be the Leafs and as everybody knows they’ve totally sucked since almost forever. Last time they won the Stanley Cup was 1967. How embarrassing.
Everybody knows what the problem is with the NHL - too many teams, too many players, too many games, too many goons, and too long a season. Who gives a crap about the play offs when its June. In the old days of the six teams it was wrapped up in April when the snow was melting. Isn’t hockey supposed to be a winter sport? I’ll watch the international tournaments especially the juniors or the women, and the last game or two of the Stanley Cup but regular league NHL, meh.
Never was a hockey parent. We were lucky that when the kids were growing up we lived close to a ski slope.
That’s my get off my lawn rant about hockey.
I suppose since you’re a blue jackets fan it does seem like a long time since last season ended!
7 months is too damn long of a season. That’s for the shitty teams. The average and better ones make the playoffs and the season never ends.

I hear you about the length of the season. It does get long.
CBJ were better last year and lots of excitement about this years team but now serious injuries are already happening. Dubinsky is hurt and rumors are that its serious and Nathan Horton back injury looks really bad.
