ITB pain from riding need help

Help!

Had major ITB band pain this last weekend from riding my tri bike. This has never happend before. Any ideas as to why I’m getting this from riding? I’m wondering if it’s related to Q factor, or saddle height, or set back??? Any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks,

M

don’t srew around - get a professional fit and make a visit to good sports physical therapist. There have been quite a few posts about your issues in the last few weeks, so you can also do a search for a lot of opinions. Besides fit, you might have some sort of imbalance. For me, ITB problems were some core imbalances and a tilted pelvis.

Once it starts it’s hard to get rid of it. Lack of flexiblity in the hips was my problem. The tennis ball treatment on the muscle between the trochanter and pelvis did the trick. That, icing, stretching and not riding.

You can screw around, ice it, lay off your bike, see a PT, get some electrostim therapy or whatever…

OR

You could get an ART treatment and be back on your bike in a day or two.

It’s really that simple: http://activerelease.com/providerSearch.asp

Did you find that you had to make multiple trips to the chiro or were one or two enough to provide lasting relief?

Thanks,

1-2 trips are usually sufficient for a given muscle injury, but I make sure that I get into my guy’s office (Dr. Rob DeStefano in Lodi, NJ) a couple times a month for general maintenance.

There’s NO WAY I could train as hard as I do for as long as I have been without regular ART treatments with Rob. I’m not “injury free” – no one is – but I know how to get the right attention for muscle-related problems when they occur, which has virtually eliminated injury-related downtime.

do you use orthotics or supportive insoles in your running shoes? In running ITB can come from overpronation so perhaps your cycling shoe just isn’t supportive enough.

I got some of the specialized shoes that have quite a high arch and they did wonders for me.

From the bike–it started when I switched shoes. I was in agony on every ride from September 2003 to February 2004. What I FINALLY did (I’m a slow learner):

  1. readusted my cleats using the cleat adjustment article on Slowtwitch

  2. went to my trusted bike guy and got refitted. He raised my saddle height and made some other adjustments that I had just neglected over the years. I was suprised that the saddle needed to be raised, but he 'splained it to me.

  3. went to the chiropractor and she whacked something back in that she said was out. I went about 2 more times to make sure the rewhack was holding.

I’ve been pain free every since!

It was frustrating to me cause everyone couldn’t believe it was on the bike. Usually ITB is run related, but not this time! I’d cry after 10 miles and couldn’t turn the pedal over. Could run pain free. I did alot of running.
