It could be worse... (1)

… you could be a roadie. from USA Cycling, in part…

"Radisa Cubric and Kurt Massey from North Carolina were suspended by USA Cycling for getting into a fist fight after the Rock Hill Criterium on April 3rd, 2004.

"In a second incident, Roberto Gaggioli from California has been suspended for the remainder of the 2004 calendar … Gaggioli assaulted Jonny Sundt with a 2x4 immediately following the completion of the Pro/I/II race in Anniston, Ala. Gaggioli requested a hearing.

“In a third incident, Keith Horowitz of California has been suspended for a period of one year. Horowitz was found to have also violated rule 105(c), physical abuse to another person, at the Solvang criterium on May 8, 2004.”

in all those years between '82 and '89, while trying to win at kona, i don’t believe mark ever struck dave with a 2"x4". i believe i remember one incident several years back at ultraman. that’s the only one i can think of in 25 years of triathlon. it’s a rougher crowd at road races i guess.

No, but he probably wanted to.

Check this out…

Have a look for yourself…“the dishonor role”

Now I feel guilty. I have to make a confession.

Once, I knocked over Mike Plumb’s bike running out of transition and didn’t stop to pick it up.

(Don’t tell him!)

Now I’m wondering if I can mount a 2x4 on my minoura next to my spare tubular and CO2. Does anyone know the drag numbers for a behind the seat 2x4 vs. a frame mounted 2x4?

you’ll actually want it between your aerobars… you’ll effectively be drafting off your weapon!

And I think this wasn’t his first time either. One of my roommate’s guy teammates was the other party and they knew about this guy from previous race encounters.

If you have ever competed in a USCF race, you would know,i will say i have felt like clubing someone before.

As a member of Monex (amateur, not pro), I am truly embarrassed by the incident. Mr. Gaggioli was kicked out of the Pomona Valley Stage Race earlier in the year for verbally abusing an official, and has a long standing reputation as a hot-head. There’s nothing wrong with joking about the situation, but when you try to club someone with a 2X4, you’ve committed assault with a deadly weapon - he’s lucky he’s not facing a felony charge. Judging by the damage to Mr. Sundt’s frame, it’s quite obvious the 2X4 was used in an attempt to injure him, and he’s again lucky he didn’t actually hit his intended (allegedly) target.

While Mr. Gaggioli is director of the team on the road, he’s is not the director/manager of Monex - I would expect some serious consequences from within the team in the near future. This behavior is simply unacceptable - one of the stated goals of Div. 3 pro teams is to develop younger riders, and you must have a certain percentage of your team made up of U23 racers. There are some outstanding young riders on Monex - Kyle Gritters, for example, is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. The type of attitude and flat out lack of ability to control oneself that has been displayed is probably not the example we want to set for the next generation racer.

Other than being a member of the team, I do not otherwise represent Team Monex, nor do I speak for the team. Mr. Gaggioli is a legend in American cycling, but that doesn’t excuse him from the serious actions he’s committed or the negative view of the team he’s created. Unfortunately, I won’t be around a computer to watch this post today, but I hope there is outrage expressed on this forum over his actions. They were deplorable.

An old friend and former road teammate of mine did a century last weekend and were discussing this same issue. He was fascinated by the fact that triathletes all seem to be friends. We hang out with each other after races, etc. We both can’t remember a single race during the five years we raced together that a bunch of people hung out after the race.

His take on it was that every person in a road race feels like they can win the race (even though it’s not true), while most people in triathlons know they are out of overall contention. Plus in road racing & crits if you don’t win that’s it, while I can do 2:30 in an Oly and feel great because it might be a PR, but I’m still 30 minutes off the winning pace. So even the mediocre roadies get super competitive attitudes…

I hear stories like this and it reminds me why I switch from road racing to triathlons. These guys should be banned from the sport forever!

Wasn’t there an incident at an ITU race back in 00 or 01? There was a fight at the finishline and it made a bit of noise in the press. Also, be thankful you don’t live in Texas. We have a triathlon ‘terrorist’ here. Many of you who’ve been on this board for some time have had to deal with this individual. Dan this includes you. He physically and verbally challenged several people including myself at a local race this spring. The police and a lawyer have been contacted and a record of previous grievances as well as current stuff has been put together in case of future incidents. Therefore, I won’t go into any more detail on this individual. He probably still lurks here. Booo!

Can’t do it dude. Wouldn’t wanna entice this indivdual any further. Plus, I gotta maintain the rock solid case we have if it needs to go that far. It’s good having friends in the right places…both high and low.

“You are zero fun”

keith is talking about jack weiss. i’ve heard certain stories about his animated behavior. at the same time, some who’ve alleged this are guilty of pretty bad behavior themselves. jack has never been anything but a gentleman in the 6 or 7 years i’ve known him, and to my knowledge he’s never hit anyone with a 2"x4", or with anything else for that matter. at the same time, everybody’s responsible for his own behavior, and that includes jack, me, or anyone else. jack never did anything bad to me, but then neiher did kobe bryant or scott peterson (ken lay and jeff skilling, on the other hand, did do something to me personally, which i felt every month when i wrote the check to my california based electric utility company).

these stories go back a year or two or more. if anybody’s got a grievance against jack, the time to take it up is when an incident happens or very shortly thereafter. please refrain from threats and innuendo here on the forum. assuming jack did something to you or someone else, and you filed a complaint with USAT or the dallas cops or whomever, that’s the place for redress. jack and i disagree on a wide variety of things. should he and i sit on the board together, and he threatens to lay me out with a haymaker, i’ll threaten to kick him in the balls. my guess is neither of those eventualities will occur.

mind you, i’m not excusing abusive behavior. what i’m saying is, when i consider the source–certain of those who are making allegations–i am constrained to take the allegations less seriously. your personal experience is one i’m not familiar with and, at this late date, i’m not interested in dredging it up. i’m assuming you’ve done what you needed to do, and i’d like to leave it there.

Whoa! No it’s not Jack. It’s a participant whose actually been banned from his races too.

I think that team approach to road cycling contributes a somewhat tribal feeling to things as well.

Also, I don’t mean to codone these offensive actions in any way, but there are certain written and unwritten codes of conduct while racing in road cycling, that when breeched, not only gets others upset, can also endanger the safty of more than a few riders. i.e. One guy half-wheels, touches wheels with the guy in front of him, goes down and takes 10 - 20 guys down with him!

My road cycling experience is very limited. I think triathlon is different. In my area at least it is a fairly small group. A friend of mine who has joined me for after race activities commented on how most of us seemed to know each other and well everyone seemed to get along. Then again without the aid of drafting, maybe we are too tired to fight.

Horowitz was in a scuffle with one of the McGuire Pro Team guys (who, by witness accounts would not “drop it” and continued to enitcie him to fight), another McGuire was also in a fight the next day in Ojai…being on the east coast last week they were also getting a bad reputation for some overly aggressive riding when it wasn’t needed…not a good way to represent your sponsor. I always go by “what goes on in a race, ends when you cross the line”, unless someone singles me out and is malicious, I’ll write most things off as “in the heat of battle”. Bike racing is much more “competition oriented” than tri as one of the other guys on this thread said…I never care about “how i did” it only matters how many I guys I beat and 2nd is the 1st loser… just another POV. kfm

Nothing like watching two probably concaved chested, skinny armed, shaved legged flyweights going at it, in their bright, shiny, local bike club jerseys . They probably “slap” each other. Or scratch like cats. And spit, too.

“Whoa! No it’s not Jack”

i’m glad to hear you say that, because i’m weary of these accusations about jack being tossed around. the fact that no repercussions of any of this has ever happened to jack as a result seems to me to speak for itself. when i hear of texas board member, forum participant, i think of jack and i would guess others would as well. therefore, best to clear that up and make sure you’re not talking about him.
