For an example of this we can look to stories of atrocities committed against Kuwait when Iraq invaded that turned out to be exaggerated or pure fiction.
And does anyone else find it strange that when Isis puts out a beheading video we never see the actual beheading?

I haven’t watched any of the videos since I watched the beheading of one of the guys that alqaeda Beheaded. No need to see that again.
But yes, the thought had crossed my mind that it was or could be a “Magic show”, but at the same time I don’t see any reason to. There’s no need to “seize control” over the populace when we readily and willingly give up control on a daily basis.

My thoughts on the isis vids are separate from my skepticism of the propaganda machine.
In the vids the victims read a statement, then they put the blade to his throat and fade to black. Next scene is the head resting on the torso of the dead body. *This is how isis releases the videos. *This isn’t western media sanitizing it for us. The isis guys do not show us the actual beheading.
My reference to magic shows is that in them the most important aspect of what is happening is what you aren’t shown.
But I’m so cynical I wouldn’t be surprised at all if those videos were produced “at Area 51 by Stanley Kubrick.”

My understanding is that ISIS is quite adept at manipulating the media. I suspect the backlash AGAINST them would be much greater if they showed the actual process of the beheading and they don’t want that. They want the “Fear” to be created without the idea of the cruelty behind it.
When you see a body with a head next to it you walk away with a very different effect then watching the largely tortuous processes of the beheading. They want the fear not the backlash of them looking like animals. I think they learned from their predecessors.
If you think this is not true simply look at the reaction and different effect that happened with the Ray Rice issue. Before the video of the actual punch, despite we had all the details and I believe even video of before and after the reaction to the actual knockout blow was much greater. Show someone sawing thru someone elses neck with the victim gurgling thru the hole in their throat and you have a different reaction. Those types of visions are enough to turn even some supporters against you.

Quite honestly I’m not sure, at least in westernized countries, that the population has much more they can “Turn over”. For the most part the government has complete and utter control and ability to “End” any actions by most civilians while the rest of the population stands by calling the “Accused” radicals.
We currently hand over 40% of our labor in this country and 60%+ of it in other countries. In return we rely on the government for many of our basic needs, education, roads, water, electricity, sewage are all for the most part partially or completely directly or indirectly controlled by the government. At the point that the government REALLY wanted any individual or group of individuals to act in any certain way they would not have much of choice with few exceptions. The whole of any large city is for the most part completely under control by simply controlling water supplies. Smaller cities are only slightly less vulnerable in the sense that there might be enough other local water supplies to go to.
Far more effective and more subtle ways of controlling the population are also available.

It happened in the UK 18 months ago. What happened was a coupe of examples of incredible bravery, 2 arrests, a lot of hand wringing, a court case and a sentencing. A pretty good example of a civilized (in every sense of the word) response.

I believe you’re referring to the Lee Rigby case?
The scenario I had in mind was different. Sounds like here they were planning on kidnapping a random local and doing a similar “Syrian” video. In the Lee Rigby case they waited around to be confronted and so the perp’s were brought to justice swiftly (wasn’t one shot dead on the spot?). If the same act was carried out and put on social media and they weren’t swiftly brought to justice I believe you’d see less restraint by the general public.
I don’t know the situation there (because it seems like Muslims are much more firmly entrenched in the UK) but here it seems like there is a lot of paranoia and in particular to those of Middle Eastern heritage (as opposed to African). Heck we had the Cronulla riots a few years back that came merely from some drunk Caucasians on Australia Day. I could only imagine what the same type would do if it were fuelled by having seen a kidnapped local get beheaded on social media.
