Is your IM must faster than staggered swims?

Maybe this is pretty obvious but I was surprized by my swim time at IMCDA. Although I have gone high 20’s in the past in half IM swims, over the last few years I was consistantly at 32 minutes. At my first IM (CDA last month) I went 1:00 and split pretty even at 30 minutes each lap. The swim felt really easy and fast…like I could almost feel a current pulling me.

I know a lot of people bitch about mass starts but I was just amazed at how much faster I was. Do others find they go much faster due to the “whirlpool effect”?

I was wondering if the distances at CDA were correct, because I was out of the water a full 7 to 8 minutes faster than expected, but it was my first full IM and figured maybe I just had a lot of nervous energy working in my favor.
