Sometimes when I see somebody post about their new multi-thousand-dollar bike I feel a little inferior, so I thought I’d give a shout out to all those people getting by on cheap stuff.
I have Masi Alare that I bought off Craigslist for $400. Complete with Sora/Tiagra groupset, Alex DA22’s with a broken spoke here and there, platform pedals with toe straps, a triple crankset, and, quote, “a taller head tube and shorter top tube to create a more upright riding position” (gasp!). And it doesn’t fit me (horror!).
However, I live in Buckeye-land and the paint scheme on my bike is Michigan maize and blue, so that’s a big plus in my book.
Let’s see who’s using the crappiest bike in their races.
No fibbing. If your bike is actually pretty sweet, don’t downplay it just to get in on this thread
I’m going to join in. My bike isn’t worse, but I’m doing IMC on it.
Well- I have a 2001 DeVinci Apex, cost 1300$ CDN new in 2001. Sora/Tiagra like yours. It’s a triple, so you know, more gears = better, right? It doesn’t fit me entirely right either. I’m doing IMC in 10 days on it.
I love starving student ironman training. I also swim in the river, against the current, to avoid paying pool fees. Really.
My bike may not be worse than yours but still it is a pile of crap. I bought it from an STer early this spring after my nice 2007 Specialized Transition Pro was stolen. It hasn’t been ridden much by the previous owner, I’m fairly sure he’s a weak ass rider so I don’t know what the deal is with it sucking so badly.
This piece of shit has been nothing but trouble. it’s a 2005 Cervelo P2 SL. It’s the biggest piece of crap that I’ve ever owned. I hate this fucking bike. It’s jinxed, has to be. Everything in the world that can possibly go wrong with a simple triathlon bike has gone wrong with this POS.
I can hardly wait for tomorrow to see what else will happen. One more fuck up from it and I’ll throw the piece of crap in he dumpster where it really belongs.
Truthfully I would not sell it on e-bay for $400 because I could not sleep at night.
We all love the coolest and fastest of the rides. But, many trigeeks, newbies and veterans, ride on what they ‘can’ or ‘choose to’. The type of bike should not be the deciding factor in this sport.
This is a great shout out to those who love to ride but feel that they might not be worthy. BS. Enjoy the ride and the PRs.
I rode a 1990 Giant Peloton Superlite with a Chromolly frame and Shimano RX100 gears ?? It was red/green/white and was huge at about 61 cm or so It was about 4 cm too big and really uncomfortable on the long rides but I just didn’t know any better. I thought all bikes were supposed to feel like that. I was in Cyprus and it was the only bike I could actually buy. I took great delight in passing really expensive bikes on my beloved steed.
I might actually be in the running for this one… I have an old Nishiki Olympic that I got from a friend who bought it from a church rummage sale for 5 bucks. My shifters are on the down tube, my wheels are old Aerospokes that are bomb proof because I needed them when I was over 300 pounds. I’ve dorked it out by throwing on some cheap bull horns and aerobars. But here’s my complete trailer trash dork move. Since the bike doesn’t fit me and I wanted to get into a more aero/tri setup, I got a mtn bike seat post, went to a metal works place and had them bend the post forward so the saddle is more centered on the rails instead of being jammed as far forward as I could. I broke too many seats with my weight on the nose of the seat, so this was my solution.
I know, pictures or it doesn’t count. I’ll see if I can’t get something tonight and post them up tomorrow… It’s definitely a franken-bike.
Hmm a maize and blue pice of shit now let me think where have I seen something like that before??? Oh… I don’t give a damn for your bike or the whole state of michigan, the whole state of michigan, the whole state of michigan, I don’t give a damn for your bike or the whole state of michigan cause I’m form O-HI-O! GO BUCKS! F your crappy ride and michigan! FYI Ann Arbor is a WHORE!
For 2007 and 2008 my steed was an clearance sale Felt S32 (BTW, it was a great bike, 3 HIM’s and RAAM). After totaling the bike in an accident, I went back to my road bike, a 1982 Peugeot (~28 lbs), bought at a garage sale for $60 in the mid '90s. I have done 2 sprint tri’s with that bike. Since I want to return to HIM’s, I am now working on building up a Cervelo…
OK- not a road bike but my mtn bike. I race on it, and it’s also a franken-bike. I even call it that- so it’s funny you used the same term! It’s a 1997 RockyMtn oxygen Race frame, and the seat post and front derailleur are the only original parts. I’ve replaced everything. I’ve got a SID fork and XT/XTR drivetrain. It’s actually really fast and light, and the reason I still have it is I can’t find anything with quite the same geometry (except a $5200 bike that just cannot fit in the budget at the moment).
Problem? Disc brakes were invented, but the bike didn’t come with them. I’ve put them on, but the frame isn’t quite strong enough in the rear to handle the stopping power, and I have a horrible ‘fingernails on a blackboard’ squeal when I apply the rear brake. It is the sound of metal fatiguing. I know it will break someday.
Im sorry to hear that you dont like your P2SL. I love mine… I have ridden a few higher level carbon bikes and haven’t noticed a difference in speed at all.
What specificly happened to your bike??

Was that my bike? I sold a black one in the spring in a size 56. It went pretty good for me, never shoud have sold it…
it started off as a nice bike, but i rode my kestrel 500 sci for over 10 years, i think. centuries, triathlons (including one hm), it was great. i don’t know if this counts . . .
