Is your normal 5k (non-tri) time much faster than your 5k at the end of a sprint tri? Just trying to figure out how much the swim and bike normally take out of your legs in a typical sprint triathlon.
My open 5k time is ~20:30 (I know, glacially slow for ST) and my sprint tri 5k time is around 22:00. Not great, but still good enough for top 5-10 OA and 1st/2nd in my AG at the tiny local races I do, which is cool by me
Mine is a little bit faster. Both are slow as molasses however.
I don’t know if this is helpful, as I don’t think I’ve ever raced a sprint tri when I was in my best running shape, but my best 5k is 15:11 and my best 5k at the end of a Tri is around 16:00 if I remember correctly. The 5k was run on a track which makes comparing the 2 kind of hard.
Probably not helpful, but maybe.

I’ve got about the same difference as you, around 1 min.
Open 5k in the low 17s, in a sprint tri low 18s. I’d guess the majority of that is in the first mile as once I get rolling I can get within about 10sec of my open 5k mile pace.
My times are quite close…
around 17:50 at an open 5k, and 18:10 at a tri, though I train for the long distance…
the more endurance and less speed you have, you shall get that quite close,
as long as you dont push too hard on the bike and fry urself…
Yes, I also say 1 min, but as I’m a duathlete I’ve already ran. Dunno if the swim takes more out you, I assume it’s just different
Open: 17:10
1st run: 17:4x
2nd Run: 18-low
In an International (10/40/5) the 5K is worse, mid-low 19’s

Here’s the rule of thumb I use: run pace in a tri = ~20 seconds/mile slower than open run race pace. Corollary: run pace in a tri = open run race pace for twice the distance. YRMV

Depends on your bike fitness and how hard you push it.
Considering that more often than not Tri 5k’s are not always that accurate, you would be hard pressed to compare the two. As a general gauge, about a minute or so means you paced things correctly and have the appropriate level of fitness.
I like to push the bike hard. My open 5k PR is 18:22. My sprint tri PR is 19:30-ish (would have to go look it up to get the exact number). My last one was on a rolling course and was closer to 21. Still top 5 overall for the run, but not even remotely close to the open 5k I had run just a month before.
You’re just giving these guys an excuse to brag about their 5k times.

You and I should race. My stand-alone 5K PR is 20:29.
Interestingly, my fastest 5k split was 19:45 in a 2 lap 10K. Also, I have done a 19:50 in the first leg (5K) of a duathlon. I don’t know why I can’t break the 20:00 barrier in a stand alone 5k.

I only have 1 tri to compare against right now, but I was 15 seconds slower per mile for the tri 5k.
I am about 30-60 seconds slower after the swim/bike.

Because tris tend to be less rigorous in their distance measuring than running races?

+1
5K - 17:52
Sprint - 19:01
.
It will also depend on if running is your strong suit or not. I’m guessing the 16 minute 5K guy is a runner…likely ran in college. I would expect him to be a little slower in a tri or du but not as much slower as someone who isn’t otherwise a runner. I’m an awful runner. My stand alone 5K PR is 2 minutes faster than my tri sprint 5K.
About 1:30 to 2 minute difference, although unless there is someone close i never sprint at the end of tri’s runs and do at most stand alone 5ks since there is usually tons of people around.
Peace

Generally, I think your are right. In this particular case, the 5K run leg is a regular local 5k. They did the run leg 2 times and through a 15 mile bike course in between. The race director made you run the second 5k in the opposite direction at least!
Bernie
my 5km PB is 16:12 , my best tri time is 20:30, but they were 13 years apart…
btw if anyone has seen my running ability please pm me i know its here somehwere.
