Could or has an age grouper ever done well enough in an Ironman that they finished behind a Pro but beat them becasue of the start time difference?
yes, all the time
.
You mean beat them for the win? Or further down the placings?
Don’t think the former has happened (yet) but it’s possible. The only thing the AGer would “win” however is bragging rights…the pro race is a different thing entirely.
The latter happens in every race…hell, even I’ve done it.
I don’t know how the prize money works. I know that age groupers are not able to win it but what if an age grouper got top 10. Would it mess with prize money, placing or neither?
It would count only in the “overall” placings.
No prize money, and it doesn’t effect the pros eligibility after placing behind them…ie, a pro who finished 7th overall, directly behind the top AGer, still gets 6th place pro money provided they finish within the eligibile time (+10% of 2nd place pro??? I dunno…)…and provided the race pays that deep ![]()
AGers finish in the overall top 10 often…just pull a few results & see for yourself.
Any time a pro DNF’s and you finish…don’t you “beat” them?
Happened to a friend of mine at the Desert Triathlon in SoCal. THey had 6 pro men in the race. His group started with the pros. He finished 3rd overall, 20 seconds out of first place and 10 seconds out of second place, 4th place overall and 3rd pro in wasnt even close. They didnt even recognize that he was 3rd overall. I dont think there was any prize money, but 1st thru 5th in the pro division got some cool stuff like wheels, wetsuits, gift certificates and such. He kind of blew it off, but wife was pissed off. During the award presentation, and after my buddy got his first place thingy, she interupted the MC and brought this to his attention. THe guy handed the mic to my wife. She says, “I just want to say that so and so finished 3rd overall and as a age grouper he deserves that recognition”, she hands the mic back and walks away. She did get a huge round of applause.
If I was the pro that got smoked, I would have handed my freebies to the dude that beat me!

Not IMO, but if that’s what makes you happy… ![]()

not if they explode because they are killing it to chase down Torbjorn and you are cruising at an easy 14 hour pace =)

I recall an article in Triathlete where Tinley said the AG’s drafted and the pro’s didn’t

Gulf Coast has been a draft fest for many years. I know of someone that crashed when someone overlapped wheels in their paceline peloton… in this race.
Lots of people beat Bjorn when he walked the last half of the IMLP marathon last year.

I’ve beaten Scott Molina TWICE…and he’s only beaten me once! LOL (he finished 1 of the 3 times we’ve raced) hehehe
Tinley also said back in the day, that if you cant swin 1:20 (maybe 1:30) 100 meter laps, you shouldnt be in the pool!
