Is this not the best triathlon pic of all time?

If you go to the Phuket Tsunami Recovery Auction, you can bid on an autographed copy of it…

Yes, it is the best triathlon pic of all time. I am the proud owner of a framed copy autographed by both Dave & Mark. I got it as a gift from my tri club after serving as president. It was acquired with the help of Bob Babbitt. It is one of my proudest possessions.

<< I was there myself that day - albeit way behind these legends( 9:40 finish for me).

that was my first Hawaii, and I was 12 minutes behind Fleck at the finish. Steve, remember when I came up behind you early in the bike. We hadn’t seen each other since high school, 10 years earlier, and then we meet up again in Hawaii. Hard to believe that another 15 years has passed when it seems like not long ago we were running the high school meets against each other, 25 years ago. And wasn’t it just a couple of minutes after you did that run with Dave Scott that we sat down and had breakfast in Penticton, about 6 years ago?

Mike,

Indeed, where do the years go?

That was a weird day in '89. I also recall pulling up beside this guy on the bike that I thought looked a lot like Kenny Souza. Upon closer inspection - It was Kenny Souza. As soon as I pull even with him, he say’s,“That’s it for me” pulls over to the side of the road and drops out!

I am grateful and thankful for those years of hard running in highschool prior to getting into triathlon. Quite frankly, the principals learned then, have proved to be invaluable over the years. Bottom line - it’s less about gimmicks, toys and theorys and more about consistant hard work.

Better bid high, I’m in for the long haul to win this bid. Z

Out of curiosity, who finished third that day? I don’t think I’ve ever heard.

A young kid named…Greg Welch.

As much as I love Welchie (he gave the vertically challenged an Ironman Dream) I think this is one of the WORST triathlon pix of all time …

I’d have to agree, simply because I thought of this photo just from reading the thread subject.

I was in that race too. I grabbed the official race results booklet and see I was in between you two guys. I went 9:53, Mike you were actually at 9:59. I must have passed you on the run. I recall that being a great day. Good conditions, not too windy, and a high overcast came in on the run. Watching the race from my perspective all I can remember thinking was, Wow! what an intense all day battle. I wonder who will crack?

Another memory was peeking over the other side of the Queen K and seeing the likes of Tom Warren, Paula, Pigg, Tinley and other legends locked in there own personal battles.

I ran in with a guy who turned out to be Rick O’Bryan from So Cal . He ended up just in front of me, we had very similar splits all day, but only introduced ourselves as we were coming down Palani Rd. He would go on to write columns for Triathlete Mag. in the Running section. Does anyone know what became of him?

Yes. It is the best triathlon picture of all time. Where can I find a copy on the net?

I remember looking at that picture (or anothe one from that race) all afternoon after getting a triathlon magazine at lunch hour.
