Is this normal pain?

Finished my first half im in 5:24 yesterday and hopefully didn’t mess my left hip up too much.
In past triathlons, my left hip area would be a little bit tight right when I get on the bike, but it would eventually go away in a few minutes. During a track workout last year, I failed to stretch properly and hurt my left hip flexor. Also, towards the last 10-20 minutes of a 90 minute run last week, I could feel my left hip hurting whenever I took a step, but it was minor pain and bearable. Yesterday I was running the first 8 miles at 7:30 pace then eventually my left hip was hurting so bad I had to start walking but I was able to finish the last mile around 8:30 pace. I was able to walk perfectly the rest of the day, While I was sleeping, it hurt to lie on my left side of the body because of the hip. As of this morning to now, it hurts to put pressure on my left leg.
Could I just have a weak/sore left hip that needs some plyometrics? or is it something worse?

See a doctor. Do not expect the internet to solve these types of problems.

And rest, a few days off will not end your life.

If its as bad as “…I couldn’t even rest on the left side of my body…” something is wrong.

Just set up an appointment, was seeing if anyone else has experienced something similar to this. Taking a few days off sounds good!

Yeah, after rereading my first post it came off kind of terse. But I have had similar problems lower back (hit a tree so trauma not exertion related) recently, but basically I rested it and after a few days an electric heating pad helped a lot.

It’s tough for anyone to diagnose things over the internet, even Dr. House…Listen to your body, if it hurts, back off. Everyone knows the difference between the pain cave and irreparable injury cave–the only time it’s even worth considering pushing through is during competition.

You don’t hear stories about Merckx “fighting though” a training ride eh?

I second seeing your doc and probably getting a referral to a PT for an eval of possible tightness and imbalances. There will most likely be great amounts of rest and stretching in your future.

have your doc check it out…maybe a tear?

Or a femoral neck stress fracture…don’t run until you see a doc
.

Thanks for all the input guys! Definitely not limping as bad as I was this morning.

sounds like a femoral neck stress fracture but I’m not a doctor, Ive had it. But I wasn’t able to put any pressure on my right leg the day after the race so you might be lucky! Good luck, hopefully its not a stress fracture cause it sucked! You might need an MRI though to fully diagnose what your injured with. safe recovery

As others have said. internet diagnosis is difficult. But a sore hip indicates to me a tight ITB, which manifests itself in a sore hip or knee. Tight ITBs are common amongst triathletes, it might be something to consider, but without specific details hard to diagnose. Tight ITBs can often exist in conjunction with tight hip flexors.

What area of your hip exactly is sore?

If it’s on the outside of your hip on the bony protusion, then I would hazard a guess that your ITB needs stretching.
