Is this aero? (HED's new bottle mount)

Hed’s new bottle mount Is it aero? If yes then it’s the answer to my prayers.

Thanks,
Ken

Yeah, should be pretty aero. Can probably get the bottle lower putting it between the aerobars, but on the stem is certainly better than somewhere in the frame.

I like mine between my bars because my computer is mounted on my stem. For those who mount their computer head units on their bar extensions, this is probably a better solution for them.

This why I’m interested because my 705 gets in the way of everything on the bars. Would this be more aero than a profile design aero bottle up front?

Assuming the frontal area of your bike is relatively clean in terms of cable routing, decent headtube shape, etc. then I would say yes. Basically, it’s going to look like a third arm in between your two arms from the frontal point of view.

Plus, it’s way more convenient having a regular bottle up there, can easily swap out bottles, instead of having to refill the aerodrink.

I’ve never used a regular bottle up front but I plan on trying it in 2010 and I think I’ll need this device to try it with.

Ken

Saw this on the IM-CDA broadcast.
Pro Scott Curry with two bottles on his aerobars - one in a usual position, the other mounted below the extensions.

That mounts above the stem on the excess steerer tube? How many people leave it long enough to mount this there? They should have made a top cap that has bottle mounts instead…

Those bars look awesome!!!

Downward sloping basebar is what I’m looking for. Does anyone else know of any other downward sloping basebar other than the Vision ones?

Thanks

Looks like some sarcasm snuck its way into the description. At least I hope it’s sarcasm…

OK, so I get that he can swap out regular bottles doing that - but - I honesly doubt it’s more aero than a Profile aero bottle up there.
I’d hafta believe that a semi-aero-esque shape (Profile) is better than 2 round, not-so-aero shapes (regular bike bottles).

Looks a lot like my setup, except that mine sits lower…

affordable and reliable.

i doubt it. I wish I could remember where I saw it written but I believe the study showed that placing a cooling mechanism of some sort along the inside forearms drastically cooled the body’s internal temperature on a really hot day. If I can spare some more time today, I’ll look for it.

x-lab has one coming out too, velcro straps to bars though. looks nice from the photos I have seen.

Interesting - would like to try it because my aerobars are too short to mount a bottle and cage between the bars (the zip tie method). Either way better make sure you’re lids are on tight.

I have longest ski bends available from vision tech (290mm) and the Garmin 705 just takes up way to space to put a bottle in there. By moving the bottle all the way back to the stem I should have much more room. I might try zip ties with this method next season, but as I have an uncut steerer I think this clamp might work great for me.

I say less areo than the traditional aero bottle /straw between the bars. The reason is you can drink from the bottle staw set up and stay in the aero position. The bottle on the stem requires you to break out of position. The body is the most un-aero element and every moment you are out of position you loose.

I typically take in too much air with the straw which is why I am keen to try something else. Also the time it takes to refill and aero bottle is probably much worse than the time it takes to drink from a standard bottle in the bars.

Ken

I have wondered about that with the front mount aero-drink. It saves time to drink since don’t leave aero position. But, to refill it takes “x” amount of time…which may negate the savings by staying aero. Hmmm…
Probably not worth worrying about either way. Use what ya like - and train your ass off!
