Is this a hammy injury?

Inside middle back of thigh, feels like it’s deep inside. No problem biking. Feels tight running up hills and next day after hill workout but squats and biking no pain…? Race on Sunday with lots of hills. I probably should bag it but witrh no pain on the bike it’s confusing. I know I should go to a doctor but I have no money so I won’t go unless I’m close to crippled…all input is appreciated.

Hmmm…sounds like hammy and considering how much running you’ve been doing it wouldn’t come as a surprise. As far as whether or not to do the race, tough one. How important is the race to you?

not important at all in the big picture. Ut’a funny, I just did an hour on the compuitrainer easy and I feel nothing wrong in my leg.

Weird but true.

Hey Jen are u doing Ultra Canada?

Shows how unimportant hamstrings are when cycling. You can ride strongly with hamstring and calf injuries (DAMHITH).

I wouldn’t run on an injured hamstring under any circumstances. Rest it, heat it, massage it for a few weeks. Sounds like it’s a minor thing: you’d know if it were a Real Hamstring Injury ™.

(I’m not a doctor, but I’ve been there and done that)

CaptainCanada and I are doing a relay. He is swimming and cycling and I’m doing the run.

If the race isn’t important then skip it. Take a couple days off from everything and see if that helps. Cycling may not cause pain but it probably isn’t helping it get any better.

Ice, rest and if you have a foam roller that would probably be good. I’ve found that standard stretching can make some problems worse so the foam roller is better, IMO.

Those are the standard treatments to start with. No big surprise

Ken, your reduced to “Just Old”, although that’s better than “Old an Haggard” I guess. Your younger than me man!

Yea it’s minor for sure and I don’t want to make it worse.

Thanks, Good luck Jen and CC!

I’ll send some healing (((((hugs)))))

Conversation in my head right now…

"Rest? I just got rolling again, I can’t rest.
Yea but resting now will help you later.
I don’t want to rest.
I know you don’t but it’s for the best.
I’ll get fat.
Don’t eat any junk and you won’t get fat..
Rest is for sissy’s.
That’s just silly, everybody knows your a tough guy…lol
Ok, I won’t run tonight and I’ll see how it feels in the morning.
Good boy, that’s the spirit.

I am quite familiar with those conversations!

Bet you’d be fine to swim. Anyway how is it this morning?

A little shaky now, but I had to go to work, 6 hrs in the truck does it no good. Going for a swim around dinner time. I’ll see how it is tomorrow. I"ll run a little and warm it up. See how it feels and then go for a bike ride…lol Windy as hell here today, there was a bike sprint race out on Sandyhook, gusts to 35mph. I’m glad i went to work. Snowing in Maine today???

No snow. Near 50 degrees, though foggy and “misting.”

Hills and speed are not good for hamstring injuries. Also, once injured they tend to recur. Once it feels better, start slowly. I stretch also but you might want to do your own web research. I’ve read a couple of times that it is OK to run slowly with a hamstring injury as long as it continues to improve, but this has never worked for me.

Disclaimer not a doctor but sounds like a minor strain, if the race is not important then probably best not to push it as going hard in race conditions could cause a more severe or lingering problem (but you know that already). I had a minor hamstring strain late last year and a 2 week rest from running got it back on track. EZ cycling and swimming were fine, there is good blood supply to the area so if it is in the muscle and not badly strained it can come back pretty quickly. I did some contrast cold and hot while relaxing at night, not sure if it helped it heal any faster but at least i felt like i was doing something about it…good luck.

I tweeked it about 6 weeks ago trail running. Jumped over a log. I didn’t even think twice about it because next day I ran on the street and once it warmed up I was fine. i ran almost every day since then and last Monday I did the course for the race tomorrow ( lots of hills ) and it felt fine until after I got home and took a shower. It was a little tight that night but the next day it was very sore and I had a noticeable limp going. I haven’t run since then but biked 3 times easy and I even lifted a little yesterday. I still feel it a little bit and I won’t run tomorrow. Do you think ice instead of heat? And any particular stretch. It’s hard to get to it. Thanks.

when it is acute (which it sounds like it is now after running the course) for the first 2 days I usually go with ice 2-3x per day (if I can, but at least once for sure, especially post cycling) for about 20 minutes at a pop to reduce the inflamation. Then after day 2, it’s ice for 3min/heat for 3min for about 30 minutes once a day (could be more often but never happens for me), the contrast is supposed to increase blood flow to the area, again not sure how much it really helps but it feels good and at least i feel like i am doing something about it. Good luck and it would probably also be wise not to do any violent efforts on the bike…

I messed around with a similar feeling last fall. Fine on the bike. Tight on the run. Took a week off. Stretched, used the foam roller. It was feeling good after 30 minutes on the trainer, so I decided to hop on the treadmill for an easy mile or 2. Walked 2 minutes and bumped up the pace. Took about 3 steps and felt 3 quick pops - yep, tore it. 6 weeks later, I started running again…

Don’t mess around. take time off. figure out what the problem is. Get it loosened up and then run.

In my case, it was poor running form. Too long stride with a lot of heel striking. Now working hard to build up hamstring strength and change the stride. POSE and CHI are my new best friends.

Good luck.

Agree that it sounds like a minor strain. Muscle heals quickly, if you let it. I’d bag the race, take it easy for as many days that it takes to get pain free and not do things that cause it too hurt. It is too early in the season to risk making this into a real injury.
