I realize that it is Spencer Smith and you can’t deny his cycling prowess…but he looks absolutely non aero and uncomfortable…the frame looks too small
Opinions?

He has always had a very upright power position irrespective of bike brand he has ridden. It obviously works for him and Jurgen Zack had a very similar style as well…
You are right…Jurgen had some back problems didn’t he…the reason he was on a Softride for awhile…me thinks.
It’s too hard to tell from that angle. It’s very distorted from where the camera is, slightly below and in front of him. Even with that it does look very un-aero.

A couple of things:
Smith has always ridden with a more upright position
The picture is taken from such an angle that makes him look even more upright.

He is sitting higher than most roadies do on drop bars…even with the photo angle taken into consideration…
i realize that it works for him …
Must come from his ITU days. When you see pics of those guys most of them are sitting very upright and not very aero, which you don’t have to be when you can draft.
It would be interesting if someone like Dan, John or Gerard got ahold of him and refined the position to make him more aero.
Hard to tell from the angle of the photo, but he may be climbing as he looks pretty choked up on the bars.
this is a pretty recent pic…less than a year… it s a alu planet x bike…(i think it s ironman AZ)
i saw is position from riding next to him and he is resonably aero…it s not as terrible as it look like in this pic…probably the angle or something else like climb???
he is also riding a different bike now, a planet X stealth pro carbon and like you can see on this pictures…he as about no spacer…
