Is there reasoning behind this? (pic)

Kev Dawson has the UK record with a 3h22 which is near as dammit 30mph. On a calm day at Kona, riders like Kev / Michael would be around 4h10 with none of that getting off and running nonsense to worry about - a ‘100’ on the Queen K with an amateur TT field would get won just inside 3h50 - it’s lumpier than you realise.

I don’t think people realize what a specialty this is. They think that Pro roadies even of the stature of Lance Armstrong can just jump on a bike and ride under 4 hours at Kona! It’s a totally different kind of riding than these guys are used to doing. This is what Hutchinson et al specialize in - ultra long distance ITTs

They said the same thing about RAAM, but then Jonathon Boyer entered and won easily. Then did it again when he turned 50.

700mm/25.4(mm/in)= wheel diameter of 27.56in, circumference of 27.56pi = 86.58in = 86.58/12(in/ft) = 7.21 ft = 7.21ft/5280(ft/mile) = .001366 miles.

90(rotations/min)*60(min/hour) = 5400 (rotations/hour). 5400 rotations of first gear at ratio 70:12 = 5400(rotations)*5.833 = 31,500 rotations of wheel per hour.

31,500 (rotations/hr) * .001366(miles/rotation) = 43.04 mph.

This is assuming a tire thickness of zero at compression, which is inaccurate, but would be tough to estimate based on size of rider/tire/bike, clincher or tubular, and psi.

So actually, he’s probably going a smidge faster than that. That is to say, he would be going a smidge faster than that.

MATH IS FUN PLEASE CORRECT IF ERRORS ARE FOUND!!!

You may want to try 26.317 inches for wheel diameter, as 700mm is a very loose approximation. I picked that based on the usual computer setting of 210cm circumference for a 700X23 tire, converted to inches diameter. BTW, you should change your “radius” references below to “diameter”. Otherwise, math is about right.

The guy turns a very slow cadence. I’d normally say it’s ineffecient (and did on another thread about large chainrings), but if it works for him (and it appears to, judging from his results, which are much better than anything I could do), who am I to lecture him?
