this may be a retarded question, but i’m wondering if there is a way to become un-sore. yesterday i lifted weights and did a bunch of core stuff for the first time in a century, and today i’m living agony.
is there anything i can do to un-do this? i need to get back on the road, etc. perhaps this is why rroof, Mark, and others are always telling me to not lift weights. it’s as if i cannot listen.
I find if you do nothing, the soreness will last longer.
Do a very easy bike and easy swim and go for a very easy jog/walk/jog then some easy stretching after the exercise, that seems to speed up the recovery.
Wouldn’t that be nice. A few things - active recovery is the best. Asprin works a little. I have heard from my weight lifting friends that does before and after for a while of HMB work too.
thanks. i’ll take that advice. today i hiked with the dogs for an hour, and walked with them 30 or so minutes early morning, but man…it’s getting worse as the day goes on.
i don’t know how people can get into a weight training program and still do their other stuff. maybe once the initial soreness passes, it’s not that big of a deal.
I always find that 2 days after is the worst in terms of soreness. Some Advil and an easy swim or spin on the trainer (if my legs are sore) help a lot. Plus some light stretching.
i want to do this core/weights stuff a couple times a week. tell me it gets better after sometime…and i won’t be so sore. if not, i won’t be able to keep doing it, as it will interfere with the tri program too much.
for me, soreness is always really bad if I haven’t done any strength work in a long time. Once you get into a routine, your body will adapt and not get sore. Give it a few weeks and work into it slowly.
Yep, totally agree with JP. As you have never really done any weights your body will have an immediate reaction to these new strange stresses you are placing on it.
What you have done is create thousands of micro tears in your muscles. Your body will go through the process of repairing these but making the new connections stronger.
The more you do the less the doms(delayed onset muscles soreness) will be and will eventually cease to exist unless you do a really hard session or introduce new exercises that you haven’t done before.
I shall not mention the S-word that shall not be named.
OK, do what I do: 1-2x / wk, I do one set of pushups to failure (sadly that’s in the low 40’s these days), pullups to failure (ditto the sadness, mebbe 15-16). I usually preceed (or follow) these w/ a set of bicycles and then crunches for my abs. 10 mins total, good pump, still looks like I have some upper body tone, w/o all those pesky weights and going to the gym and stuff. Just enough to maintain some semblance of cosmetic bulk; even if I can no longer bench my way outta a wet paper bag, it looks like I can - and as we all know, that’s all that really matters anyway
Sometimes I’ll follow this w/ 10 mins of swi, uh, I mean, stretch cordz work, and done.
What everybody has said so far is pretty much correct. The reason for this soreness is mico-tears in the muscle (DOMS). Unfortunately this is the way our body has chosen to make itself stronger. When these micro-tears heal the muscle is essentially stronger than previously. The good news is that as you get used to lifting this will subside. The bad news is that this is a lie and you will just get used to the pain=P. But seriously, the only thing that will make it better is time. What all the other suggestions do is feed blood, which in turn feeds nutrients to the muscles, which will facilitate faster healing. Good luck and keep up the hard work.
FWIW- remember that you haven’t lifted in a while. Take it easy and err on the side of conservativism. You didn’t get “out of shape” (not judging here) overnight so don’t try to get in shape that way!!
