I am in the market for a Zipp 808 front wheel. Found one that is $800 new and it has the Zipp 88 hub. I don’t know anything about hubs and assumed that all Zipp 808 were equal. Is this the standard hub? Is it a good hub? Is $800 a good price for a new 2009 Zipp 808?
Is there much difference between the 2009 and 2008 808?
Thanks!
The 88 hub is new (for 2009) front hub. It is an excellent hub. It has some serious improvement over the previous, and overall the wheels are quite a bit stiffer with the new hubs (larger axle diameter and new alloy and impact-formed spoke holes - that may not be new, can’t remember) and should be longer lasting (adjustable preload).
$800 is a very good price. Almost too good… ~$1100 is what places like TriSport sell them for.
Thanks! I was trying to figure out if there were any catches. Basically the with an 808 wheel there is just the hub, spokes and rim. So if it is a 88 hub, bladed spokes and zipp 808 rim seems like that pretty much covers it.
Is there anything else on an 808 that someone could swap to sell cheap?

The 88 hub is quite different than the previous one. I think there were some wheels that were sold early in the year (maybe distributors clearly out inventory) that did not have the 88 hub, they were probably december 08 or something like that. What would seem most likely, if the wheel is really cheap, is that it has the older hub. But then it’s odd that the seller specified the 88 hub.
