I was entering transition at Vineman Sunday morning when an official asked to see my new Rudy Syton aero helmet. I hand it over and he tells me it is missing the “approval sticker”. Now I look around and see many others of these in transition and told him I was sure it was approved but he tells me it must have the label/sticker or it is not legit. I never argued this point since I assumed he was right but I was concerned he wasn’t going to let me race. Finally he relents and said he was sure it was an approved helmet and let me go but after the race I was checking it out and it does say it is approved by some organization but apparently not the one he wanted to see.
I checked the Rudy web site and don’t see this addressed…does any one know what sticker or label I am suppose to have? Is it CPSC or something like that? Thanks!
I heard the rule of thumb was, if it is sold in the U.S. it has the necessary approvals. If it does not have a certain sticker well, I am not sure where to get them. I think the officials know what helmets to look for.
Yes, it is. ALL Rudy helmets are CPSC certified. Just like ALL Louis Garneau helmets. I think those are the only two brands I know offhand that make 100% CPSC certified helmets…
Rudy Project Syton Supercomp: Another Italian company, with a chrono model with more vents than most, a face shield and a split tail. Molded in the shell. There are unique pieces on the sides that extend down to about the cheekbones, called “bionic wings.” Medium length tail does not get all the way down to the shoulder. Comes with plugs for the front vents. Ring fit with two shell sizes to fit 54 to 61 cm heads. Comes in red, white and blue as well as white. CPSC certification. $200.
Giro Advantage 2 (“coming soon”) is CPSC certified.
Interestly, one of the requirements is having the sticker in the helmet, so technically the person who questioned the helmet was correct in doing so.
It must not only be a CPSC approved model but also have the sticker on it. An example of why would be the new Giro Advantage 2 which is a CPSC certified model but pre-release helmets were given out before the certification was official. From a legal standpoint (as I understand it) those helmets without the stickers would be a liability to the race director.
