Mike Aderhold, a smarter man than I, made this observation this morning while selling helmets in our store:
The Bell Furio sells for $54.99.
The Giro Atmos Limited Edition Team $189.99
The Bell Furio weighs 272 grams, has a lot of vents (less than the Atmos though I believe) and an innovative, adjustable helmet retention system.
The Giro Atmos weighs 280 grams, has a lot of vents (more than the Furio) and an innovative, adjustable helmet retention system.
The Furio is 8 grams lighter, and $135 less expensive.
I’m impressed. And yes, we have both.
I was wearing a Furio when my head bounced off the Great Highway in San Francisco, so I can vouch for the their sturdiness and quality of construction too.
I’m not as big of fan of the Atmos, compared to some other helmets, but it does look pretty cool.
Plus Lance wears it, so therefore it has got to be faster than any other helmet out there.
I have a Furio and I LOVE it. It’s hard to compare since prior, I had a cheap 30 dollar bell, so this thing Rocks that one. It’s light, snug and comfortable.
and still have enough money left to take the wife out and buy her coffee and admit to your multi-purchase- while softening the blow by telling her you got her one too and a spare one just in case;-)

I’ve got one and love it, and survived a pretty good head bang in one. I’m hard pressed to figure out how the Atmos is that much better.
This post arrived about 6 weeks too late.
I couldn’t imagine spending $190 on a helmet, (even if it is worn by Lance). I have a Bell Alchera ($45) it is a little heavier than the Furio, but my first one did a good job of protecting my skull when I crashed last year.
Thank you.
I was about to buy a Bell Sweep or Ghisallo.
I think this helmet inflation is getting way out of control.
I have a Sweep and I wager, from the looks of things, that the Furio is more aerodynamic too, and less than 1/2 the price.
Been using one for a few years and no complaints. Frankly I just don’t get fancy expensive helmets as I thought all certified ones were pretty much the same in terms of safety. Of course it could just be I have no fashion sense as my wife like to tell me. How often should we replace helmets anyway?
What I find hard to believe is that no one can come up with a cheap aero helmet. It doesn’t have to be super fancy, just sit a little lower on your head, an not be quite as wide. Loose a few vents and add a tiny bit of tail. Louis G has the right idea, but I’m sure someone can make a cheaper one.
