So yesterday I was looking at flowers and trees with the family and I walked around the nice thick, soft grass barefoot. I noticed that my foot would first hit the cushy grass and then hit the unmovable Earth. The Earth is hard.
I went home and measured my piece of shit Sauconys and it had 2.5 inches of cushy foam and lots of plastic. When I walked in them it felt softer and more cushy then the grass.
Does the horrorfic amount of cushioning in running shoes make the idea of running on dirt or grass to avoid injury really a non factor?
2.5" of cushion? Are you wearing stiletto running shoes? Running on grass is iffy because you can hit holes or bumps and not see them till too late. I’ve actually heard that running on dirt is harder than pavement, but I could be wrong about that. I can tell you that the surface you run on makes a difference in your endurance, your comfort, and your recovery. Anyone who doesn’t believe me can try running on a steel flight deck for a couple months, and get back to me.

Just make sure you don’t fall on the non-skid…
Been there done that and don’t want to do it again. It’s those pesky tie down chains trying to trip you, the nasty area around the gear, etc. Once saw a guy run into the leading edge of something and had many stiches to repair. Said he was busy watching the tie downs!
For me it’s not so much about the cushion, but the feel. When you are barefoot or close, you know exactly how your feet are striking the ground instead of having the foam mask the pressure points.
I also find I am more prone to twisted ankles when I use thick sole shoes running off road. I think it’s because you don’t feel the rocks giving way under your feet until it’s too late.
I saw a female officer running out on the flight deck and she just tripped over her own feet and ended up removing the skin on her knees, forearms, hands, chin, and some on her cheek. Not her best day ever.
