Is Peter Reid making a REAL comeback in 07?

I was listening to huddle and PNF on multisports.com the other day and they were talking about the New Years beer mile and how Peter Reid was planning on participating to commence his “comeback”. Now I realise Huddle was being his usual tongue in cheek self but i thought i sensed an undercurrent of truth to the talk of a Reid comeback.

Could he be simply referring to Reid coming back to “do” Hawaii in 07 as alluded by writerguy on this very forum last month? Or could the potential outcome of Stadler equalling Reids 3 Kona victories be enough to drive him into Hermit mode one more time to preserve his status in Ironman history? I do hope so… will be a hell of a race seeing Reid and Macca toe to toe down ali’i drive fighting it out through the finish.

I think we need to put some pressure on Mr. Reid. Hanging out in doughboy mode at Silverstar is not sufficient. He needs to show Norman how to run :-). This could get good. The Norman vs Macca smackdown, with Reid squeeking by in the midst of all the hype…actually, my money next year is on Faris blowing through all the hot air created by the Norman vs Macca smackdown and quietly taking victory number 2.

Rumour has it that Faris is showing up for a “tune up payday” at the Halifax101 event! That alone should be a good enough reason to show up and race.

I agree about Faris…

I sense a Beermile smackdown. Hell, I’d drive the 50 miles to Squamish to do it. What does the “old boy” weigh nowadays?
Maybe this is just a publicity stunt to kick start his career as sales rep for Granville Isl. Brewing?

Yep. I am not a big Faris fan (yet) but he does seem to be the most balanced athlete out there. I am willing to bet he will be back and better than ever next year.

I’d like to see Reid back. The man works *hard. *

A friend told me I ran like Faris, which I considered a compliment since at that time he was world champion – until I saw some unflattering clips of him on the run. Wow! Plenty of running gurus say form doesn’t matter, but wow! Awkward. Now I feel bad about myself.

“Rumour has it that Faris is showing up for a “tune up payday” at the Halifax101 event! That alone should be a good enough reason to show up and race.”

He may not be the only pro ‘tuning up’ in Halifax. There’s a chance The Sergio may make his Canadian debut…stay tuned.

I think Peter has a real shot at winning the world beer mile champs next year.

With plenty of training… he could break the world record!!! At least under 6mins…

Maybe drtommy can show up… what was his PB, 6:17?

I’m still working on break that 9min barrier…

If the Sergio shows up in Halifax we better warn the WOMENS of Quebec that Jonnyo’s competition will be at this end of the continent

(…by the way, how did a Peter Reid comback thread turn into a thread about Jonnyo?..).

oh really…the sergio thinks he can come to my part of the country to kick my butts??? well…hummm, i guess i iwll put that on my calender also… hope it s cold and rainy like it should be back east!!!

Ohhhh…this is getting good…a Jonnyo vs Sergio vs Faris smackdown in Halifax…maybe we can try and convince Mr. Reid to fly across the country to make a celebrity appearance and test out his “pre Kona legs…”

Jonnyo, should we send a message to the fathers of Atlantic Canada to lock up their WOMENS and their Keiths?

All the Beer Mile info and stats can be found here:

www.beermile.com

Tom and Pete being Canadians should be able to hold their own. If you check out the stats on the beer Mile site. most of the records and top times are held by Canucks.

To be fair… beer miles are a Canadian thing…
The rules are more specific to the packaging and alcohol content of our beer.

Here in Adelaide, my winter getaway (Calgary in winter… yuck), beer comes in 375ml cans. Slightly larger.
The only track close to here is actually a grass Cricket Oval… although the outlined perimeter is exactly 400m… so I might just have to organize an Aussie beer mile.

Interesting beer mile web site Steve. I noticed that these “Kingston” rules seem to have been developed around 1994 or so. Well before this the men and women at University of Waterloo were conducting our annual beer mile on a 400m cross-country loop. We didn’t have to consume the beer out of the cans and used the standard plastic cups from the beer store for the 12 ounce beers. I first ran it in 1985 and the swill we were drinking was Brick Red Baron … this in itself was a handicap. The winner that year was a triathlete and runner you might remember. His name is Tom Sawyer (yeah, really his name) and he was a machine that clocked around 5:10. That year I was in the running for 800m (probably the only race I’ve ever done where shorter would have been better) then the wheels (ok vomit) came off/out and I struggled to around 9 minutes. By my final year I had a pb of 7:16 but we were using cups and not shotgunning out of cans. I believe that superstar triathlete Lisa Bentley raced in at least one of these old school beer miles since the women on the xc team got involved too. I think they had a handicap with smaller beers though

Now that I’m 40 maybe I should get into one of these in the super masters category but I’m definitely not trained for them like I was in university.

I just finished listening to the competitors podcast with Chris McCormack and I thought they just mentioned that Peter Reid was coming back to do the Ironman in 07. Can someone else confirm this?

Easy on the ladies guys… my mom found out that Sergio / Faris / Jonnyo race was on and she fainted.

I also listened to that show and Macca was talking about Peter coming back like it was old news…maybe we missed something.

I heard Steve Larsen is coming back to kick everyones ass.

If you are doing an Aussie version we use these glasses

And skip the running.
