Is Luke McKenzie the REAL DEAL?

Is it time that we start sitting up and taking notice of Luke McKenzie after his convincing win in IM BRAZIL against some stiff competition. He has now won five ironmans. This year he has won IM China against Macca who ended up pulling out, but he didn’t finish and luke crossed the line first. He also proved he has the speed with a win at the Bussellton Half Ironman.
Is it time we the Triathlon Community look at him in the upper eschlon of Ironman athletes. As MACCA has said it doesn’t matter how many ironmans you have won, Hawaii is what everyone grades you on!!
Will he be a factor this year in HAWAII??
Would love to hear your thoughts!

I am a huge fan of Luke and his missus Amanda for the great athletes they are and the awesome ambassadors they are for the sport.I believe Luke most definately has the talent to be on the podium in Kona but wonder if he really believes that he does.It is an interesting question no doubt.

Remember,he is following a rich history of Aussie success in a sport that gets very little recognition in our home country. Can he mentally rise himself up to challenge the legends that are Macca and Crowie?I believe he can but what I believe means little as it is what he believes that matters.Jason Shortis has won a bunch of Ironmans in fast times but what happened in Kona?My old mate Rhodesy has won some fast Ironmans but what happens in Kona?Kona is different, can he?Yes he can, most definately because he has the talent. Will he? Well,we shall have to wait and see.

I started following his races last year when he was going for 3 wins @ ironman. He still managed a decent race (15th?) in Kona, despite racing 5 + ironmans last year. I say he will fare pretty well once he begins to focus on Kona exclusively. When you can rack up 2-3 ironman wins per year I’d do that for a while until focusing solely on Kona.

Is Luke McKenzie the REAL DEAL?

Yes.
Keep an eye on him over the next few years.

I think Luke is the real deal for sure. I’ve followed him for the past 2 years. He’s definitely improving each year. I predict he is top 7 in Kona.

I think you are right, he needs to believe in himself that he can beat those top guys and step up from 2nd teir! and up his run mileage to be a factor. from his tweets it appears he is a bit lazy!

he is having a good year. and he seems like a good guy. that’s aways nice to see.
i saw his blog. he says he’s going to change the rest of his 2010 calendar; drop the remaining IMs and save his legs for Kona.
good for him.

You must not have ever spent any time around Luke. He hammers consistently in workouts, and can put his training program up against any pro. He does like to have a bit of fun now and then (largely due to his adorable, wild ass fiancee), but lazy is not something I would ever attribute to Luke, even in comparison to the most hard core folks in the sport.
