Currently riding slice 5/ hed jets/ shimano 105 components for everything but sram cassette.
Was thinking about upgrading my stock BB30 Gossamer crank set to a sram red crank set.
Are the benefits worth the extra cash?
It’s just a tad bit lighter, right? No more aero. A bit stiffer but I don’t think that matters too much if we’re talking about triathlon.
I would spend my money on a lot of other stuff before cranks. But if I ran out of stuff it would be cool to have sram red cranks :).
Cranks are definitly at the end of what to upgrade first list. Actually most components are for that matter. You would get a much better bang for your buck if you got faster aerobars or wheel cover.

the only benefit in terms of getting you to the finish line faster is the reduced weight. which might be like a half second advantage on a flat course, maybe 2 or 3 on a really hilly one.
priorities should be:
training
position
tires/tubes/pressures
wheels
fork
aerobars
frame
cable routing
aero chainring/skewers
and then you can start worrying about weight weenie stuff thats left if you have any more money.

Already have all of the above except for a good set of aerobars (ordering a vision tech), aerochainring/skewers (never knew these thigns existed until now). Would a crank be the best first upgrade after the list? Going to be competing in an IM soon and hopefully buying a new sram crank will mentally give me the placebo effect of feeling faster.
aero helmet should be on that list too, and skin suit,
and a clean bike setup. spare kit and bottles should not be all over the damn place
the crank really doesn’t matter at all.
like if you had more money buy some lighter shoes or fancier front wheel.
Already have all those except I have HED wheels instead of Zipps. Should I drop some more money on aero bars or stick with a vision tech and spend the money I saved on different parts of the bike?

stick with your visions. buy a trip to the wind tunnel with john cobb maybe? =)

either that or if you are really desperate to get rid of your money, just give it to a charity.
And if the desperation requires the money to be spent on bicycle equipment, Jordan has his fund raiser going.

after switching between Red cranks and 900’s and riding my other bikes with Dura ace and Ultegra and 105’s… i’d say NEVER spend money on your crankset. EVER…EVER you will not even know you switched the cranks out other than looks.
get some more races instead, or just throw the money out the car window or something.
