Is it too early in the season to do doubles?

I did my first double yesterday, an 8 miler and a 10 miler and will be working up to double 10s.

After a discussion about my limiters I’ve decided to do some serious work on my run this winter (again) and have brought my milage up to 45 mpw, hopefully soon to be 50.

Planning on TTT in May and IMMoo in September. Does anyone think it’s too early to do these runs? I don’t feel that beat up and am running again today.

Also I’m down 5 lbs do to some encouragement from people here which seems to help with the running too.

Heck no - if you can stand the volume, go for it! Just make sure your PM run is pretty easy. I’ll occasionally do the am run a little harder. Doubles are the only way I can get my run mileage above about 60 miles/week and it will really pay off come spring when the “speed work” begins.

I think Francois is doing triples right now

Thanks, needed to hear that. Some of my friends said I was crazy :frowning:

First time doing it, took it easy on both runs but still got a little sloppy at the end of the second one. Just trying to get all of the miles in.

Triples, holy cow!!! Triple 10s?

jaretj

Ah - just look at his mileage totals from the Nov and Dec running challenges  Over 400 miles/month … You can do the math

Of course, he is coming off a tibial stress fx from last year so …

it’s not too early, but you must recover well with nutrition (and i believe in stretching mid-day). pay attention to yourself, as this is “riskier” way to train, but i say go for it. you’ll have a big pay out for it later on.

Better food choices have helped me lately.

I find that eating chicken and vegetables with brown rice gives me more energy than spaghetti (pasta) and seems to help me recover better.

That’s exactly the opposite of what I expected and have practiced in the past.

To get my milage in, most of my days have been 8 to 10 miles. Does anyone break up those shorter runs into maybe two 5 milers?

jaretj

I would say it’s not to early for doubles, but I would question why you’re doubling at 45 miles per week. I don’t do much doubling until mileage is well past 50 mpw and likely in the neighborhood of 70 mpw. With a full triathlon schedule I can see staying on the lower side of that range, but 18 of 45 miles in one day doesn’t seem ideal, IMHO. A better spread for 45 would be 15, 10, 10, 5 and 5 and/or 15, 10, 7.5, 7.5 and 5.

i would not break up 8 miles. if you do a fast 5 am, and more relaxed 5 pm i could see breaking up 10…but only to run the am 5 hard.

I see your point. I actually did it yesterday cuz I missed my saturday run but plan on doing it more in the summer. I was thinking of just starting off now to start building up over 50.

Thanks

jaretj

I see. 8 miles isn’t really much stress for me and it’s only slightly over an hour.

Thanks

jaretj

if you can run 6 days a week that will help you get your mileage in with “lower” doses. as an example, 6 runs a week at slightly over 8 miles will put you at 50. if you can run 7 days a week, then just a little over 7 miles will put you at 50.

you could easily exceed 50 by adding in higher mileage for a long run, and adding in 2-two-a days…maybe a second run of 30 minutes or 5 miles twice a week.

if you can run more days in the week, you’ll dump less mileage on yourself at one time. IMO, that is a better formula.

jaret,

Ah, fond memories. Before the Triple T last year I was doing 40K ride morning 10k easy, then later in the afternoon I did another 40K and a harder 10k. Both rides were the courses on the CT. Loved the workouts, but I had some fabulous bonks towards the end of the 10k’s.

It’s great breaking up the workouts like that. Good luck!

What a timely question. Going to give it a try in January. I’d like to work up to 8 Saturday AM, 8 Saturday PM, then 16 Sunday afternoon.

A guy I used to work with ran 12-13 miles every day - for almost 4 years - without missing a day. Never raced, just liked to run. His Achilles tendon eventually had enough & gave out.

The last 2 weeks I’ve been at 5 runs down from 6.

It was more of a timing thing since tuesdays were 3 workouts in the day I cut the one run. I liked the 6 runs better. Probably should rearrange the schedule a bit.

jaretj

That’s in the plan too but not for a while.

I used to bonk at the end of Gordo’s HIM workout if I didn’t eat enough on the bike.

40 min run ~ 5 miles
2:30 bike ~ 50 miles
40 min run ~ 5 miles

Funny thing is that my legs feel very healthy, it’s just my shoulder that seems to be a bit sore during longer runs.

12 to 13 a day would be wonderfull.

I can’t believe you lost another 5 pounds – I saw a picture of you this past summer and you looked completely different from the last time I saw you (almost 2 years ago, now). Congratulations on the weight loss and on the up tick in training. I see a very fast season in your future.

Thanks Amy

I really didn’t think I could lose much more but I’m really surprised at where it’s comming off.

My arms are thinner as well as my face and butt. But still I have some left on my stomach that I want to lose. It’s quite posible I could get down to 140 by May (another 4 lbs).
