I’ve never been penalized. And I can’t find a specific USAT rule that forbids it. But this comes close:
Rule 3.3b, and it requires that competitors “conduct themselves in a matter that is not offensive in any way to fellow participants, spectators, officials or volunteers and is considered reasonable and acceptable in the community.”
Public urination is a violation of the law, not the USAT rules, almost anywhere. As you say, it is largely not enforced, because very rarely is there a problem where you see bunches of racers pissing in people’s yards. At IMLP, I saw lots of people stopping at the side of the road, but it was mostly in places where there was no one around to object. I have been at races where there were a few problems because racers were going in people’s shrubs.
I think that overall, people grant racers a certain amount of leway due to the nature of the event. They know you’re out there for a long time, and that there aren’t enough porta-potties, so as long as you don’t crap in their front yard(seen it), they won’t complain.
On a related note, this year the residents of Hopkinton, MA, where the Boston Marathon starts, were very vocal about their complaints that a lot of runners go to the bathroom in the streets, in their yards, etc. Mind you, they still want to have the race start there, but they don’t want the 20,000+ people answering nature’s call in their yards. I rode through there the day before the race, and the entire downtown looked like corrals. I don’t know how to fix that one, since they only had a couple hundred porta-potties.
You are talking off the bike. What about doing it on the bike. Who can now but you? It will be absorbed in your lycra shorts and you can wash it in the aid station with some water. Why having all this expensive carbon and aero stuff if you stop to urinate?
True enough. My oversight. I phrased my response as I did because, as you say, if you go on the bike, no one can really tell, except for the person behind you, who is prboably observing that your seat has it’s own weather system, and is moving as far away from you as possible.
You should never wash yourself. It’s easier to get the urine smell out of your shorts than your shoes. ;p
This is a gray area. Suffice it too say, if the women’s auxilliary of the local baptist church, the minister of which is on the race organizing commitee, has rallied to put up a cheering and aid station at mile 20 on the bike and you coast through it with your dick in your hand peeing off the bike at 20 mph, that is going to create a situation.
If you are in the middle of no where and you take a natural break off the side of the bike at a safe, appropriate spot on the course, no worries I would suggest.
At Ironman NZ an official said he didn’t want to see anyone peeing off the bike. I took him at his word- he said he didn;t want to see anyone peeing.
I’ve only done Sprints and Olympics so the situation has never come up on the bike (it did during a marathon once, but I had adequate cover to make a pit stop without a problem just off the course, and the stop did not affect my time; it was still slow). But, I could not imagine being coordinated enough to risk whipping it out at 20 MPH. They are a lot worse things to lose than 60 seconds by the side of the road.
In a big road race when you are hanging on by a thread (like my first 20 races in Europe) you can;t stop to pee. You have to pee off the bike. So you see other fellas doing it and you learn how from watching them.
The first couple attempts are a little sketchy, then you get pretty good at it.
I find it much easier to pee standing in front of the toilet or urinal rather than sitting on my bike in front of the toilet or urinal and trying to pee. In most porta-potties one cannot even get the bike inside.
You must be really attached to your bike. Do you shower on the bike too?

thats how I was taught to do it, just like sweat, you do it in swim so why not bike or run?
i peed in my lycra many times at imlp and i had the worst rash for several days in my crotch and inner thighs 100X more painful than any soreness from the race. next year, i’m going to take it out before i start going.
