Is it being a narc asking to change?

Let me explain.

I work every other weekend 3-11. I work with the same tech every weekend, it’s our weekend. We have been working the same weekend for a while (6mths) and I’m getting a little tired of her. She’s a great tech, happy and friendly, but not helpful. We either don’t work well as a team, which is a possibility, or she is not helpful.

Am I being a whinny bitch if I ask to move the the other weekend? I’ll have to tell my boss why.

Cant you just lie about why needing to change weekends? 1) some family needs being looked after, they messed up when your shifts were, 2) kids sporting events this season, 3) your vacation schedule (maybe series of weddings coming up that just happen to fall on those days), 4) talk to HR in person, tell them what you have written below. She is great, but you two just arnt clicking. If something opens up for the opposite weekend you would appreciate it.

I could lie, but I’m he worlds worst liar. I would totally screw it up. I can’t tell them it’s an upcoming an event because it’s every other weekend, so one weekend off wouldn’t do it. I don’t mind telling my boss the truth, I just don’t want them to think I’m being a complainer.

I worked with my other weekend person for years, like 4, but he bailed and went to first shift. Never had a problem with him. We worked great together.

I mean isn’t it easy just to ask if you can work with your friend again, if the opportunity opens up? This way you 1) being a team player, saying no rush. 2) arnt throwing the current person under the bus. You just preferred your friend.

I would check why your friend decided to switch weekends though🤗

Tell the truth and hope you get a change. If you don’t, each time you go to work you are going to dread it more than the last time. How much fun will that be?

I’m getting an attitude and that’s not good for anyone. The patients should expect my best and if I’m not concentrating a 100%, I can make a mistake. I wrote my boss an email and I’m waiting for a reply.

I think waiting is the worst part.

Not what Nova said.

You could also just talk to the other tech you work with. Something like “I feel like we’re not on the same page with ___, maybe we can sort things out better?”

(I used ___ because I don’t know what goes on in a lab).

You get the idea. Don’t attack her, just frame it in a way that you want to make work better for both of you. If you felt this way maybe she noticed it too. And if that doesn’t go well, you can still try to change shifts.

I am terrible at confrontation, especially when it comes to asking someone to do more work. She does her work, but won’t help out when I’m in busy. What’s happening is I’m getting an attitude and refusing to help her when I easily could. Time is one of the number one things when it comes to lab work. (Obviously accuracy is first.) If a specimen is delayed, it could harm the patient and if I’m just letting the specimen sit there, I’m wrong.

Example. Saturday I was in the urine/coagulation department. That department is also supposed to do microbiology. (Mostly just plating.) I was really busy with micro and had to spend long times in the there. During that time she is supposed to step up and do her dept and try to do my dept, at least pt specimens on the instrument. She let them sit. I would come out of micro and find a bunch of work piled up and her on her phone. It pissed me off. On Sunday, I switched departments and went into hemo and let her do urine/coag. While she was away, I didn’t do her work… I could have. I should have, but I didn’t. Passive aggressive much?

Everyone – your tech and your boss – would find this story interesting. Just present the facts to her, and see what happens.
I wish I had magic words to help people that always avoid uncomfortable conversations. Here’s my best shot: just love yourself, laugh at yourself, and say what needs to be said. The work sounds important.

My advice .

  1. I wouldn’t make this about you wanting a change b/c it’ll make you happier. Whenever someone’s asked for a change and led with their needs, it doesn’t sit well. Employment isn’t about making employees feel happy. Sure it’s a nice tangential effect, but not the primary purpose.

  2. I would make the request about what the lab’s purpose is – accuracy, efficiency, etc. You feel the change would improve those things, then lead with that. Have situations, examples, data for your case and present it in those terms.

  3. As a boss, way easier to agree to a change due to ‘2’ than ‘1’. ‘1’ opens up to favoritism, and other issues. ‘2’ is easily defensible from a management view.

I would speak up and pay attention to how you make your request. Something like “I think I would work better with someone else” vs. “My co-worker sucks and bringing me down” make a huge difference.
