Is crime around you worse today?

Crime in Austin is up.

Ten years ago I never had a crime committed against me.
Several years ago I went for an early morning run and left my garage door open. I came back to find a guy in my garage rummaging through my wife’s purse. I scared the shit out of him but he had a good story that I bought for a couple of minutes. Important thing is he did not get anything and I got him out of my garage.

I have had two trailers stolen at work in the last 2 years. We are renovating a house and had the tools stolen a couple of weeks ago. My son had two scooters stolen from his apartment (he has a car now instead of a scooter).I have confirmed with police that crime is up here.

When punishment is 3 hots and a cot, there is not much disincentive to commit crime.

You sure about that?

It seems my number has come up a bunch. When I asked a local policeman if crime was up, he indicated it was.

Is it people are just stupid? There is not a punishment that scares anyone anymore? .

I was under the impression that the threat of punishment has never materially reduced crime.

In the summer I sleep sometimes with the front and back door wide open (with a screen door). Our town has lots of unnecessary police and almost no crime. There are occasional breakouts of break-ins but the police always catch them after a couple of weeks and then it’s quiet for another couple of years.

i think both violent crime and property crime have been down year-on-year in north america since the '70s. i think changes in media and tech have made us much more aware of crime, though.

Yeah. I was just watching the Vice prison special where they presented a lot of info on crime occurrence and trends. Basic takeaway was violent crime has been trending down over the years, but the cost of operating prisons/incarcerating/etc has risen. Incarceration itself however has clearly risen however as the US represents about 25% of the worlds incarcerated people (though comprises 5% of the overall population).

Pretty good special if you get a chance.

I would leave the back door open with just a screen at night but I am certain that the raccoon in our backyard will figure out how to open it and we’ll wake up to him rummaging through our food.

No.

I used to live midway between 2 large universities in the same city; have moved from there but my office is still in the area. Crime was and remains mostly petty theft and alcohol-related stuff, with some sexual assaults thrown in. That has stayed fairly constant over the years that I’ve been here.

In the larger neighborhood area where I live now there is some drug-related crime - dealing, break-ins by users, an occasional shooting or assault. But my immediate neighborhood has a lot of cops and fireman who live there, so it’s pretty safe.

Yup.There was a stabbing 1km from my house last week and a police chase ended 1km away in the opposite direction yesterday. Of course, the town we live in only maybe 15 sq-km, but still!

House is going on the market in the next six weeks and we’re moving further out of town.

How big of a radius are we talking here? For example, in my immediate area, crime has been rather static. I.E. zero crime in an estimated 2-mile radius. I live out in the country were the population density for that area is pretty low and the last crime spree (2 years ago) was via the mailbox baseball people.

To answer your question, my perception is that crime in my town has gotten significantly worse in the past 5-8 years. Increased population, not enough decent jobs, high rate of substance abuse, etc etc all contribute to the problem.
I agree. Many crimes go unreported so the numbers really do not twll the truth.

The last murder in Whitby was February, 2013.

Suck it, bitches.

Was that the missing runner? What happened there? I forget - didn’t he just slip on the ice near the lakefront and fall in, or was there foul play?

Yes, over the last year I have seen a dramatic increase in the number of sock and shoe thefts in my house, even the occasional underwear theft.

I suspect the two white fuzzy adolescents that have moved into the neighborhood.

Other than that the only crime I have seen is not moving the fuck over for faster traffic.

Shoes, socks & panties - but I’m not sending my dogs to jail… Actually it’s definitely up around here, what’s more frustrating is knowing who’s doing it and the lack of willingness for the courts to act. I’ve had a neighbours house raided a minimum of 2x in the last year. It’s gotten ridiculous.

No the missing runner was rules an accident. His body turned up on shore in the spring. Well either an accident or suicide by jumping in a lake when it’s -30C outside.

Don’t know as I only have lived in the area for 10 years or so. City of 150k and we get 1-2 homicides a year apparently, but I suspect that most of the crime is on the wrong sides of the tracks.

The only shooting I know that happened close by was when the LAPD opened fire on two people delivering newspapers early in the morning.

Are you in Lomita or Torrance?

Torrance. A few blocks away from where they shot out the truck. I slept through it though.

My town has 38K in it and is as safe as I think a place could be from major crimes. It’s the petty shit that is increasing and I think it’s mostly for drug money. We have a casino not far from my house and you might be surprised how many people are arrested for drugs at or near that place. A cop once told me that fast food restaurant parking lots were great to sell drugs in because the traffic comes and goes so quickly. I guess education is our best defense. I just improved the security around my garage. Now even a zombie couldn’t get in.

I see your onto the new Lefty phrase. And you wonder why you all sound the same. Lets see, can you use White Guilt and Confirmation Bias all in one sentence? If so you win the Lefty prize of the day.

As for the OP, violent crimes seem to be down; property crimes seem to be rising. Even in our little remote wilderness area there was a lot more theft this summer. Weird ones. Entire camp sites being stolen while people are out. Garages being ransacked. Food freezers being broken into. Convenience Stores being broken into for cigarettes only. Bike thefts in broad daylight. Fake bills, shoplifting, credit card theft… Just weird crap. Seems like this summer we have also seen more homeless transients. Young ones, early to late 20s. Of course that has something to do with the our new found freedom to smoke pot.

Confirmation bias is a powerful thing.

Sounds strangely like where I live. Heavy crimes are usually Mexican gangs offing each other. The rest, which is not reported is non-stop property crimes. Druggies wandering around every night trying to exploit a weakness. I have locked gates, alarms, dogs, lights and they still try to get my shit.
