Is carbo loading pre race still a thing?

Gotta be going pretty slow to switch over to fat as your primary fuel source during exercise (RER below .7). “Fat adaption” as a concept has pretty much been debunked, with any research demonstrating fat adaption at a given exercise pace neglecting to mention that participants also raised the pace of their physiologic thresholds and maximum speeds, effectively demonstrating that, through training, they are now faster so they can run at a previously difficult pace without as much carbon dioxide generation and lower their RER.

Peer reviewed research has Magnus Ditlev cycling at Ironman watts with an RER of 1.0. As close to no fat being burned as physiologically possible and scientifically demonstrable.

Haha, no bro. An under fuelled right where you bonked doesn’t equal being fat adapted.

Because you weren’t fat adapted. Your main fuel source was still carbs, yes? You’ve never been LCHF, Keto, Carnivore etc. for a long period of time? Right? Ergo, you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about and you’re not a n+1 at all. I’ve done both. Been in both camps. I have zero ideological disposition; just care about performance and long term health.

Yeah I hear you, and you’ve shown you clearly have no idea what it is (and that’s fine by me). The trend was carbs 30 years ago as per Tim Noakes etc. and he’s evolved - done a complete 180 etc.

You have an ideological disposition. And this was originally that carb loading was still a thing - and it is. Because it’s pretty clear that racing on carbs is the best way to go for performance. Louise Burke has done a ton research on this - endurance athletes are low on carbs in many cases and, per research - states that you can get low carb benefits from training without carbs, but do not need to be in ketosis for fat burning to happen. But it is clear with her and her teams research that HCHO athletes perform better.

Saying you have zero ideological position is comical

Because you have zero idea on each - and my performances (and basically most athletes these days) are performing their best on more carbs on race day - it’s only a battle for the finish line.

I would still love an example or two of high performing athletes in the last 5 years who are doing it LCHF. It’s just not best practice. I am definitely not a nutritionist, but it’s very clear that carb loading provides performance benefits in endurance athletics.
