Is Cali 70.3 a Hilly Bike Course?

Looks like it from the elevation profile.

Yes. Three notable climbs, winds can play tricks on you too. I’m not a big fan of the run course. Half of it (the run) is on streets with a camber to them (not flat) and my hips don’t like that very much.

I have raced it twice. Don’t think it’s that hilly. What makes it a slower/harder bike course is the wind and all the turns, out and backs. It’s not a very fluid course. There is one significant climb, though. I guess it’s all what you’re used. At the time, I lived and trained in the SF Bay Area and we climbed all the time. For context, I would say Wildflower and Buffalo Springs are hilly.

I would say its more rolling than hilly. The scale on the elevation map makes it look worse than it is. he first 10 miles are mildly rolling, 10-20 are flat and fast, 20-30 rolling, 30-42 are the hardest part of the course. 42 to T2 can be very fast if the wind is not blowing…if it is, you’re dead into a headwind. There are 3 decent climbs, the first and hardest of which is at Mile 30 and quite short…a 1/4 mile or so but pretty steep. The other two are a bit longer, but not as steep.

I raced Baja as well this year and thought that was a far harder bike course. Wildflower is also much harder, IMHO.
