IronTour Lake Placid: July 1-3 featuring Slowtwitch First Annual Whiteface Hill Climb

OK folks, in the spirit of doing it “cause it’s there”, I invite you to join me on IronTour Lake Placid July 1,2,3.

My wife is off with my son on summer vacation to the in-laws, which means that I can shed my worldy responsibities and play “athlete” for yet another weekend :-).

This is a free training event. No timing, no support, t-shirts…just lots of sweat and work.

Stage Zero (optional) 4K swim

Fri July 1, 4 pm, , Mirror Lake Beach Lake Placid followed by carbo load dinner at Mikes across from High Peaks

Stage 1a 112 mile bike

Sat July , 5:50 am sharp. Depart Mirror Lake Beach ready to ride at 5:50. I know this is early, but stage 1 am includes the Whiteface Mtn Hill Climb. We have to summit by 8 am or get kicked off by the Park Rangers). The climb alone takes anywhere from 50 min to 70 min depending on your ability. For the entire Iron Tour, this is the only part that will be “hard”. The rest will be below Ironman race pace aerobic (save your juice for race day).

The ride to the base of Whiteface is ~ 45 min as we ride the reverse Ironman LP route to the start. After ascending and descending Whiteface, we complete a reverse loop of the Ironman LP course riding up the long Cascade Screamer “descent” from Keene to the Verizon Olympic Complex. Then we complete “loop 1” at Mirror Lake. The second loop is a conventional forward loop of the course with no Hasleton Road out and back. The total vertical for this ride will exceed 9000 ft of climbing !

Stage 2: Run 30 min transition run

immediately off the 112 mile killer ride

Stage 3: Swim 50 min Easy

4 pm Mirror Lake…swim last 10 min with no weetsuit for recovery and icing effect…followed by dinner at a location TBD

Stage 4: 2 hour run easy.

Start 7 am July 3, Mirror Lake Beach. Run along Mirror Lake drive up the end of the bike course to the top of Papa Bear. Run down 86 down Papa, Mama and Baby Bear to River Road and then follow the conventional run course back into LP. If you are done before 2 hours, run out and back on Mirror Lake until you have completed 2 hours

Stage 5: 64 mile bike.

Start at 9:10 am July 3, Mirror Lake. We ride a conventional forward loop of the Ironman LP course…but wait…just to soften everyone up, before we turn left to head up to high falls gorge on 86, we do a torturous 4 mile out and back up to the “Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway” Gate. The is actually the hardest part of the Whiteface Hill Climb from Saturday.

Stage 6: Easy recovery 1K swim

…followed by a late lunch/post Irontour banquet/greasefest and McDonalds

Total Training: ~ 15 hours

My American friends can stay around for July 4th and pile on extra miles. I will need to get back to work, anticipating a deep fry that I will need 3 full weeks to recover from before Ironman LP !

Please post on this thread and send me an email at: devashish.paul@sympatico.ca if you are interested. I will be posting details about preferred accomodations shortly for the crew.

…what no takers yet ?..I thought there would be a whole whack of hammerheads jumping at the opportunity for extra miles…or maybe you guys just buy expensive gear and don’t actually train (nothing like laying down a bit of light hearted smack to get the uberbikers out…)

Dev.

Sounds like a great weekend! However, I have to go to the outlaws (I mean inlaws) that weekend. I don’t know how you got out that one!

Trevor, you gotta get out of the trip to the In-laws and hammer me (again) on the bike. What about the Prussian Rocket ??? Is he just gonna look at the Garneau TT bike or thrash my Roberto Heras legs into submission (notice how the hill climb part is early in the weekend…)

I actually invited the in-laws to come and visit at Ironman LP and cover their accomodations :-)…and bought my wife and son a flight back home for the first two weeks of July

i’m considering making the trip up to placid over the 4th weekend to start getting ready for canada. i’ll have to see how training ride goes this weekend to see if i’ll be able to handle the mileage, as i haven’t been able to bet in a lot of bike mileage this year (disclaimer - with or without the mileage base…i still suck on the bike). i should be able to handle the second day at the least, so hopefully i can get the travel plans put together and make it up to LP to play along and see if i can try to get some epic mileage going.

**RSum716 **…welcome to IronTour LP. Don’t worry about speed. The tour is all about miles (just like the Boston Marathon Virtual Camp…)

Dev

I think that schedule would wipe me out for the month of July much less racing the IM.
Good luck!!

You’re going to get me into trouble. Let me work on the being there on the Saturday… If I can go I’ll be there Fri and Sat… I keep you informed.

Cheers!

i just got sucked in the dark chambers of surgical residency …

no way out for me ;-(

but have fun!

Trev…good that you will be there…in trouble or not !

Sebastien…you gotta come up. If you thought taking pics drafting off you at 50 mph descending Keene hill was crazy, its gonna be 55 mph heading down Whiteface !

Dev

Paul I am interested in doing the whole Placid bike on Saturday. Getting on the road at 5:50 am to do whiteface would be tough. If there are no takers on whiteface, I would definitely for 112 miles if we roll out around 7:30 or 8 am. I live about 2 hours away and I would have to stay overnight to be ready at 6:00 am.

Bump for the day crowd.

So far we have Triyoda, TrevorS, Rum17, Cimit, dev and three dudes from Ottawa doing part or all of the IronTour LP.

Any other takers. How about NYC, Kus and others ?

i just booked accomodations from the 1st through the 5th (alpine air motel on saranac ave). i’m going to try to roll in early enough to ride one loop on friday to see how where my biking stands and then try to participate as much as i can. riding UP the keene decent should be interesting.

Dude, save your legs for the Saturday Whiteface climb. Keene is easy after Whiteface. See you in LP.

I just booked at the Jackrabbit Inn. I have a room with 4 bunks each going for $25 plus tax per nite. I can offer up 3 more bunks in the room, first come first served. If there is demand for more, I can get another room or upgrade to a room with 6 bunks. Cancel at Alpine and move over to the Jackrabbit Inn. Its only 5 min out of town by car.

There is a kitchen where you can cook your own food and a lounge to socialize etc. We used it for Epicman the past few years and it was awesome.

I’d be interested if my girl goes home for the weekend. I’ll post if she does. If I go, I have room in my car for 3 bikes and 3 people from boston if there are takers.

Like I said though, not for sure yet. eddie.

I’d like to partake in this fun sounding weekend!

I’m from NJ, but i’ll be coming from Norwich VT.

Chris

dev, thanks for the offer, but unfortunately there is no cancellation policy at alpine due to the short proximity to the weekend. it’s ok though, the prices weren’t that bad at all, and should be within reasonable stumbling distance from the local bars! i can always bring along a couple of jugs of the lake placid brewery beer if you guys are doing anything back at the jackrabbit.

maybe i’ll just do a shorter ride on friday and get some swimming in as well to try to survive the double loop on sat.

Dev,

I imagine you are looking to fill bunks for the whole weekend, but if it's available I'll take one for Friday night. If I come up on Friday, I will be in for the Whiteface ride. I assume I will need a 25 cog, for that one? I ran Mt. Washington last weekend and I plan on biking Mt. Greylock (3900 ft, highest point in MA) this weekend, so Whiteface next weekend will make a nice trifecta.

Matt

RSum…good plan to take it easy on Friday. The Sat ride will be a killer. I did it two years ago the day after the Tupper Lake Half Ironman and let me just say that you want to be fresh for this ride.

The LP bike course alone is 6600 ft of vertical. Add over 4000 ft for Whiteface and you are actually up over 10,000 feet for the day. The base of the ski hill is at 1200 ft, the summit over 4800. The base of the climb is another couple of hundred lower than the base of the ski hill. The most I have ridden in a day was 16,000 ft of vertical when I did an 8 hour ride in France that included Gladon, Croix de Fer, Telegraphe and Galibier. This won’t be as crazy, but it will be as good as we got. This ride with you triguys should be fun.

Triyoda, may the force be with you. Three mega climbs in three weekends…you are the man.

Dev

how many miles is the whiteface climb anyway? i gotta check what cassette i have on my wheels.
