just received a mail-order wetsuit for Gulf Coast Tri (this weekend) and for use in IM Florida in November. I tried it on at home (IM Stealth size ML) and it seems just a bit too tight. I’m told that to validate the fit, you need to get in the water with it, but I am reluctant to do so – once it has gone in the water, can I still return it? Friends have suggested I go to the expo and try more on, but won’t I have the same issue there (not really knowing until I get in the water)? Any chance the IM Wetsuit booth at the expo will allow me to swap mine out for a larger size? Will they have fit gurus that can tell me what size I need to be in?
And yes, I know, I know, I waited to long to take care of this. Gimme a break, I’ve got 3 kids under 6. I’m lucky I’ve still got time to train!
I’ll ask the basic questions, have you pulled it all the way up to your crotch…It should feel a little snug, I imagine like sausage in a casing. At least that’s how I feel. If should be tight but not uncomfortable. Unfortunately I found it is important to try one on and get in the water. Even the ones that I tried on that were snug, were uncomfortable in the water.
I have the Stealth and found that I had to go up a size. Good luck, but I would try to return it and search for another one.

Hi carriere4,
To answer the questions in your post:
1/ Yes, a wetsuit is meant to be tight, it should feel firm, but not restrictive. There is just right tight, and there is too tight. If you let me know your height, weight, as well as your chest and waist circumference, I can give you an idea of whether your size is appropriate.
2/ Make sure you are putting your suit on correctly. Follow the instructions on our website www.ironmanwetsuits.com
3/ Get yourself to a body of water and go swimming in your suit. Its the best way to find out, and you’ll still be able to exchange the suit if your not happy. Once you’ve been for a swim, if you still are unsure, then get along to your nearest Ironman Wetsuits retailer, and ask his/her opinion, and whether you can try another size on to compare.
It may seem unlikely, but we are not a major global corporation scheming at ways to swindle the common man from his money. Rather, we are a small company, dedicated to making the best possible wetsuits, so you guys and girls can have a great swim. If you ever have any concerns, questions, or just what to chew the fat, feel free to contact us
Cheers
