Ironman Supplements?

One Ironman under my belt. For a month following my finish line crossing I was extremely irritated at everything. I was on edge mentally. Hated being in a crowd of people. The littlest things would set me off quickly. The smallest noise of a piece of ice hitting the kitchen floor was too much. Thankfully, this is not my normal disposition.

Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone know what specifically was depleted during the event that would bring this on? And, what possible supplements can be taken prior, during and post event to help avoid this following my next finish line.

Not sure a chemical i.e. supplement deficiency is guaranteed to be causing the change in temperament…

I can attest to, and there has been so much written about, the post “x” (insert event here) depression… (so yes perhaps biochemical)

And rather than classic depression it can certainly be mood altering, the sudden shift from goal oriented, focused and structured lifestyle, the event itself and the huge release post event… this is all irrespective of whether the event and prep was successful etc. And as many have found out the only way around it is to create the next focus in your life, sports based or otherwise…

It sucks for sure… good luck finding your happy place…

it sounds like you may have been heavily fatigued. Although I’m not sure “noise sensitivity” is a symptom of that

As for supplements, personally I take nothing. I train hard, and recover very well in between hard sessions, and take 4 light days in every 20 day “block”. Also, I don’t resume regular training until I’m recovered after the light days i.e. if I’m not recovered after 4 days, I take 5.

I’ve found it’s not immediately post-race, but there’s definitely a phase you go through after a big race (or any big life event really). After my first Ironman I felt physically drained and not myself for several months. I’m not discounting an actual medical physiological deficiency, but also consider the importance of scheduling a new race goal, getting outdoors in the sunshine for recreation or training (SAD is definitely a thing!), reconnecting with friends and family and your social circle that you ignored all summer.
