The above 50-54 year old AG winner from IMH on the bike is wearing a rear view mirror on his helmet. Is that a safety measure I haven’t been exposed to or what?

I commend him for favoring safety over fashion - even F1 cars have mirrors, so why is it considered the height of fredliness for a cyclist to use one?
(Having said the above, I personally have never used a mirror…due to some neck discomfort a few years back I was tempted to start using one, but then moved somewhere that encouraged me to ride more, and the pain went away. Amazing what a little extra basic conditioning will do for many of those little aches and pains we all tend to get on the bike, eh?)
Hawaii is a mostly closed course. I don’t think mirrors are popular because they open the door to accusations of drafting and constantly watching for the drafting police. I do not know the person in question so I don’t know what his purpose was for wearing a mirror. Personally, I would not wear one for the reason I have stated.

Good Christ, the answer to your question is “or what?”
And the answer to your other question is, “I’m sure Joe is not too happy about it.”
And finally, in the interest of full disclosure, I actually did get a drafting penalty in Kona this year and served my 4:00 (with ironnclm as my witness!) before heading into T2. Why I would actually be drafting at Mile 105, with a killer tailwind, within 500 yds of the last aid station, sitting up, is beyond me.

2nd fastest US 40+ in Kona this year, behind the guy in the pic
I can think of any number of reasons to have a rear view mirror in a non drafting triathlon. I would certainly not think that he’s looking out for draft marshalls just because he’s got a rear view mirror.
I’m his age and I’d sell my soul to run a half marathon at the pace he ran his marathon.
That would be Joe Bonness…
Ah, now I get what this thread is all about: it’s apparently just a back-handed slam against the guy who beat a well-known triathlete. I’m sure the winner appreciates the innuendo.
That’s the key. The “accusation” people are making isn’t based on the just the rear view mirror. It seems if you take all available information into consideration there is only one conclusion.
Sue, Lar Dog is no troll. Just the guy that erased 17+ minutes on me on the run at IMoo to finish in fourth place in the M50-54.
Oh yeah, he also took the fourth and final slot for Kona next year the dirty rat bastard (but said with a smile). Otherwise he’s cool. Say hello to him next year.
About his original post, I think he has put 2 + 2 together.
I really think a rear view mirror is not needed on any triathlon course and especially not by people who can really motor on the bike and will pretty much never be passed by anyone other than draft marshalls.

Yes you did, and took it all with a very good attitude, considering the circumstances of the penalty.

The winner has a certain reputation. He’s well known, and not many people cheer for him when he wins.
SupportCrew, if you think that your husband got beat by Kevin because Kevin cheated, you open yourself up to the same scrutiny that Kevin is receiving. Nowhere to run when you claim someone is a cheater.
Do you know if Kevin uses that mirror in training? Is it POSSIBLE that he used it to gauge the distance of other competitors behind him so that he can keep tabs on them? Is it easier for him to that via of a quick glance in the mirror or by turning around?
It’s one thing to be upset about losing, it’s quite another to call the guy that beat your husband a cheater.
