Ironman Race Numbers?

I just got a email from IMNA sawing race numbers for Florida will be assigned tomorrow. Do these mean anything for AGers? If they’re a ranking, how do they do it if you’ve never raced a IM before?

Years ago at IM races, race numbers used to mean something. They used to do things like:

  1. For the top 100 or so finishers, your race number was the place you finished in that IM race the previous year.

  2. At IMH they did #1 and then for everyone else, it was alphabetical starting with “A” one year and then “Z” the following year.

Not really sure what they do now. One nice thing that IMNA does, that is starting to become more popular is put peoples names on the race numbers. I think this trend started a few years ago when in big marathons like New York and Boston, some people would write, there name on their race shirt and then it would be, " Go, Fred" all along the course. Better than “Go, #45678”. I noticed that thses people with their names on their shirts got the biggest cheers.

I was able to watch IMFL last year. The race numbers appeared to be organized by age groups. That is, each age group got a group of numbers like 573 thru 612. Then the next age group would start. Not sure why it was done this way.

Good Luck

The trend has been going to grouping age groups together so that the competitors can see where they stand in T1 and T2 by glancing at the bike racks.

Thanks guys.

Makes sense they are sequenced for AGers.

IMMoo had names w/ the numbers. Good idea.

Coming from Kona as a spectator, I was disapointed they didn’t do the same there, especially considering it’s the flagship race.

They’ve been doing this at IM NZ for a long time.
