Have been training/competing in half ironman events for the past 2 years. In just under 10 weeks there is a full iron distance a short drive away. I am tempted to up my training for the next 10 weeks using finks programme, enter the event and see how it goes… No pressure and see if I can complete it.
Has anyone done this or has experience of this kind where the heart leads the head…!!
I have “sort of” done this nearly every year for my full IMs. I will train for a couple of halfs here that I do in spring (Oceanside/Superfrog) with my long bike up to 70 miles and long run up to 15. Then, about 10 weeks out from the IM, I just up that slowly to reach 100 on the bike and 20 on the run peaking it 2 weeks before the IM.
I am a 11:30-11:50 IM finisher, so no podium-quality performances out of me, but it works if you’re just going for a decent finish.
Good luck!
No matter the proram, just to finish, if you can 3 weeks out, build up to swimming 1 hour continuously (preferably OW), ride 100, and run LSD for 3 hours, you’re good to go.
If you plan to “up your training” then can we assume that you are not training at your highest volume now?
What I’m getting at is if you are capable of training 15 hours a week for HIM training then you will most likely only be able to train near 15 hours for an IM.
Now some of the intensities will be lower but you won’t be able to bike another 100 miles a week and run an extra 15 miles if you are maxed on volume right now.
Just something to think about.
