Ironman NZ (2)

Looks like some decent coverage so far. Not that these races will bring in any real ratings on broadcast TV, but the webcast is great for fans of the sport.

M Kessler with a super quick swim and Torrenzo out front.

I saw some updates on Twitter. Looks like MBK caught a group of male pros. Bigger advantage to being the best female swimmer than the best male swimmer in the pro field?

Would be curious to see if she sat in the pack and drafted or went through. Also seems like she could get a legal draft on the bike from some male pros.

Working great.

She went through towards the end of the swim. Ended up swimming only 30ish seconds behind the lead guy.

She came out of the water with a few male pros so it looks like she got a draft but certainly went through a few of the males. Anna Cleaver was right behind her as well.

The weather looks incredible! MBK swam 46:47 and came out, solo, about 20 yards ahead of the men’s chase pack so I’m guessing she probably didn’t sit in too much!

Watching some of the age grouped sauntering out of the water or casually walking through T1. Come on man! Get a move on. Sheesh.

6 posts and not one hit and run joke. Too soon?

No chatting about this race? Wow? What has happened to Slowtwitch???

Albert = banner day…Brownie = legend. What a great race to follow watching CB shedding competitors as he went after 1st place.

MBK is just great to watch. Nice race from her (so far).

Really digging the race that is going on in the M50-54. Glah and Molina certainly still have run speed. Dammmmn…

I tried to catch coverage of the run but it kept freezing. Anyone else have similar issues.
Followed race most of the day. Thinking it’s about time Docherty stfu and do something, at the ironman level that is. I know he has two Olympic medals.

I want to know what happened to Bevan. Is that two DNFs in row?

I’m still alive! Very disappointed with how the race went today, more stomach issues that I need to sort out…

You mean other than get the race record at IMNZ in his first attempt?

If the thread title had Alberts on P5 (I don’t know what his bike was) wins IMNZ by riding away at 325W on Tufos then there would be more than a handful of posts.

As for Bevan, it is too bad. He “only” set the course record last year so it’s not like the guy’s Olympic distance ability to does not carry over, but even when he did that record, he did have some stomach problems.

But the great story is Cam Brown and not because of his age. I know everyone says that he is “ageless” but frankly there should be no major decline at 42 if the athlete took care of himself. If he’s still doing 8:21 at 46 that’s another story. Some of the women like Badmann and Karen Smyers have raced very well into their late 40’s, but very few men. Dave Scott was 2nd at Kona at 40, and 5th at 42. It’s not a surprise that Cam Brown can still roll along really well. I would really love to see him out race father time4 years from now if he has the will

Meredith Kessler is my hero. Not because of her dominant performance in the race (though that was awesome) but because at 12:10 in the morning she was stood on the finish line to hug the last woman to cross the line (who walked the last 30km doubled up with back pain but failed to make the cutoff by 10 mins.) Meredith then gave her her own finishers medal. Restored my faith in humanity. Well done Meredith.

Damn, all the retired pros look great. Pretty impressive performance for Molina. 30 years after winning the thing, he puts out a 10:10 for 3rd in the age group. Glah in for 6th with a 10:25.

i was interested to see whether philip graves did his usual and he did, great swim, hammers then bike and then runs like a half decent age grouper - can he just not run ?

I’m well aware of his record. I’m talking about since then. A whole lot of talking, and a whole lot of DNFs. I’d rather see him figure the longer stuff out instead of taking pics of his shoes saying these are gonna be a blur in Kona or whatever he said.

For the IM Talk listeners, Coach John Newsom raced a 9:16 in a sprint finish to get 2nd in the 35-39 AG. He’s been documenting his return to the IM with a goal of a KQ. He definitely backed up his words and predictions for himself yesterday.
