Interesting. I’d love to know where you got htis from.
Any idea if this will replace the Subaru Chase?
Will it be the same weekend in June?
What will happen to Peterborough?
These question are all assuming that TriSportCanada is hosting the 70.3.
Source was a posting on trirudy.com
That is all that I know.
I don’t think anything will happen to Peterborough if there is a new 70.3 or if the Muskoka long course is changed into a 1/2.
This has been in the works for the last two years (per Mitch)
Hope it will finally happen.
oh sh*t!
It would be great if it was, that is a tough bike course but it is a great venue for a race.
The only drawback is that it is nice to have a high quality long course race in the spring at such a great location.
There will be a lot of interest in that race though.
If it were to replace the Muskoka race, that would be a great loss.
Hmm… no doubt websides for IronmanNewJersey through to IronmanMaldives will be sprouting up any second now
That sounded great… until I saw the 70.3 part.
Hmmm. Very interesting, I know there was some research/discussion into this about a year ago.
Far as I can see it thus far:
Pros:
-Always good to have another 1/2 IM distance in the province.
-NAS runs very solid events.
-Great prominence to a terrific area.
-Ability to attract some big names.
-Great logo.
Cons:
-Loss of the chase format?
-Loss of a great and increasingly rare distance format.
-Inevitable increased entry costs.
-One of the few IM qualifiers that isn’t a half-iron distance.

Except that ironmanmuskoka.com is a completely legit webiste. If you know anything about triathlon in Canada, you’ll know that Mitch Fraser (brother of NAS owner Graham) already runs the largest series in Canada, and has polled Ontario people about their thoughts on a 70.3 race coming our way. If I recall, he was originally thinking it would be in the fall, though. This new site is registered to Mitch Fraser. I doubt he will also register “websides for IronmanNewJersey through to IronmanMaldives.”

It doesn’t have to be run by NAS.
I like the distance and I hope it doesn’t go away…
The real question is, will Canucks pay the crazy entry fee when there are other fantastic races around for less than half a 70.3?
Good point, though with Mitch behind the scenes it will likely feel like an NAS event. Not a bad thing.
I’d be very bummed about the loss of the distance, particularly since Collingwood left a few years back.
True Dat!
The Parry Sound 1/2 is an example of a great race that does not cost too much. I certainly hope it is back next year after a pause for road construction. The run is definitely killer and is a great equalizer after a pretty gentle bike.
Hopefully they hold it in the fall, and preserve the integrity of the current Muskoka long course event. One of the downfalls I can see though (if they keep both the Muskoka and the 70.3) is the loss of IM qualifying spots. There is no doubt Muskoka would no longer be a qualifier if they can shift all of those spots over to a 70.3 race instead. And yea, the price…we’re spoiled in Canada - we can race a 1/2IM for about a hundred bucks. You can bet that will change, though.
so why don’t we get a full IM here in Ontario or Quebec ?? Canada deserves more than just one Ironman. I know there is the Summersault iron distance race in Ottawa, but M-DOT ?

Ok… I hadn’t done the domain name look-up… I consider myself suitably chastened.
Mind you IronmanMaldives would be kind of interesting… 60 laps of Male on the bike…
I think we are all waiting for Ironman St. Pierre et Miquelon.
I think they might have issues running BOTH a 70.3 and a chase in Muskoka. There’s a lot of local support, but the reason the bike course got changed this year was due to residents along the route complaining about the road closures. There’s only so many roads in the area, and even if the courses were different there would be bound to be some overlap – I can’t see the residents tolerating that.
And I believe the reason there isn’t an IM in Ontario or Quebec is due to the simple proximity to LP…the majority of people are about a 6 hour drive or less from LP. Not that there should be any fears of cannibalization, as there are more than enough people to fill an IM in ON/PQ and IMLP…
