not me…and especially not at this point in the season
Wouldn’t that depend more on when your IM is than what point in the season it is? It’s only 3 months away from Lake Placid and 1 month and a week from the Triple T.
Wouldn’t that depend more on when your IM is than what point in the season it is?
Both- I was implying my season. IMlou is about five months away
Gotcha.
I’m very busy and very pedestrian by ST standrads and I probably topped out at:
3.5 swim
175 bike
35 run
Those would have been my max weeks. I assume you are giving averages, but averages over what period of time? From what I’ve seen of STers, those do not look like ridiculously big miles to me. It would be huge for me, but I’m convinced that many here only train, post on ST, and work (probably in that order :-)).
I feel like that really depends on what point in your training program you are at.
Last week was a light week for me and i did:
Swim:5.5 miles
Bike: 6hrs total on trainer
Run: 27 miles
Weights: 2hrs
Those do not seem too far off from what im looking at doing in the next 2 weeks or so. But it is not something i could handle every week all season long, especially while at college.
For my first HIM I was doing about
run: 40mpw
bike: 40mpw
swim: 0mpw
That was good for a 5:30
For the IM maybe I should double the bike
=)
maybe swim a mile…
who here trains this much?
Miles per week swimming: 7 (11.3 km)
Miles per week biking: 232 (373.3 km)
Miles per week running: 48 (77.2 km)
Those numbers are at or slightly higher than mine (for running, anyway) for my peak volumes when training for IMC in 2007 and 2008.
Just did a big week where I got close to that - about the same in the pool, slightly less biking and running.
My max week looks more like yours. I’m minimalist
what are you training for?
Chuck Norris
.
thats people specifically training for Kona, who are specifically a bit more fit than the average ironman age grouper =)
I got these #'s from:
http://ironman.com/faq/konafaq
It says:
- What is the average time it takes an “age-group” triathlete to prepare for an Ironman?
Triathletes train an average of seven months for the Ford Ironman World Championship. The average hours per week devoted to training for the World Championship generally fall between 18 and 22. Average training distances for the three events:
Miles per week swimming: 7 (11.3 km)
Miles per week biking: 232 (373.3 km)
Miles per week running: 48 (77.2 km)
I’m just trying to get a feel for the mileage that I will eventually have to build up to.
In my longest weeks leading up to an ironman I will probably swim about 10k, bike about 200ish miles and run about 35 miles.
Definitely not at this volume year round though.
I do have the luxury of training year round here in So Cal, but I definitely have an “off season” where I still train but it is not so structured and is all about what I feel like doing that day. The off season is great because I can do all my runs and rides with my wife! Or we skip runs to go for hikes with our dog or go mountain biking.
I usually do 12 weeks of ironman specific / focused training. This includes increasing the length of my long runs each week and getting in a long ride every Sunday. I build my long run up to about 2.5 hours (20ish miles) and a do couple months of riding 100-120 miles every Sunday so that on race day 112 is just another ride. There is also a bit of time prior to this 12 weeks where I sort of transition myself from whatever fitness level I am at to get to a point that I am ready for this ironman focus.
I would think it all depends on someones fitness level, their experience in the sport and what their goals are. When someone says they are training for their ironman thats a year away I wonder how long before their race they will burn out. The off season is important to recharge mentally and physically. Its also a good time to focus on a weakness, maybe join a masters group to improve their swimming, doing the 100/100 challenge, strengthen their core, etc. All of these will help their racing without having them become a “January Champion” thats burned out two months before their summer IM.
I am entered in the Wildflower long course on May 2nd and my last weeks numbers were:
Swim - 6,100 meters (all LT)
Bike - 227 miles (1/3 LT intervals)
Run - 70 miles (30 miles really hard tempo/fartlek/hills).
My biggest training week, which is annually 2 weeks prior to Ironman, would be:
Swim: 4 miles
Bike: 160 miles
Run: 38 miles
All other weeks are less than that. I’m an MOP’er though.
Mileage for last week:
175 km bike
10 km swim
41 km run
6 weeks until IM Lanzarote
I will increase those numbers this week a little, followed by four weeks of dramatic increases.
