Dan, i am very sorry about this but the one time i saw you i was chearing and then someone stood in front of me:(

Thanks newbz! So glad you caught this guy! I almost couldn’t believe it when I saw him on the bike course! I though he was just a local out cycling with us until I saw his race number! He ran in those shorts too I’m told (perhaps even without shoes?)! Got a rousing round of applause at the awards banquet when WTC showed a really great video and he was in it!

He wins the HTFU award for this week. No question.

Yup, he did finish! Just checked his stats: Joe Lynch, age 42, from Memphis, TN: 16:10. Managed 13.84 mph avg on the bike.

Close call between Rappstar and this guy for the HTFU award!

Nice. Those shoes and pedals must make for a quick T2.

What for, dressing stupid?

I think that guy is what it’s all about. Guts. Not 5,000$ worth of equipment! And yes, He is an Ironman!

Nope Memphis,IN not TN I saw him on the run he did have shoes…
I’m from memphis and when you said that I thought hmmm never seen him before then I checked theres a memphis Indiana…

Cool…

it was the clincher tires that did it for him
if he had tubbies 12.5 avg
.

Yup! He IS an ironman.

Now, if I see him next year at a race with an M-dot tattoo though, I will be seriously disappointed!

Another very interesting cyclist I saw - a younger guy, about 25?, with a pretty decked out Aegis or Javelin (fuzzy on the details, but a tri bike with aerobars, etc.) with rat trap cages and some running shoes! ??? Not sure what to make of that. I mean, all this aero stuff does help a little (bars, wheels, yadda yadda), but I’m pretty sure I cycle better clipped in (pedals of choice). But, come to think of it, I can’t remember how the cages felt!

edit: Thanks holmes! I like to get the details right, and I just saw Memphis, TN instead of Memphis, IN. Easy assumption for sure. So, where is Memphis, IN - right across the river? He probably walked there carrying all his stuff and walked home just to show me up!

edit #2 - Yup, just checked. Memphis, IN is just north of Louisville. My “romantic” thoughts are that he biked down Sat right at the end of registration, checked in, slept in a tent that night, “raced”, packed up and biked home

What for, dressing stupid?
Stupid is in the eye of the beholder. He likely thought the same thing about all the spandex and tri bikes, when he set up works fine for a fraction of the price. This guy is a link back to the old days and the original IM in Hawaii. Old school.

Saw a guy at Chattanogga tri earlier this summer. Did original IM -Hawaii. Had his bike. HEAVY. Those are the IM

Awesome! Thanks for sharing you pictures.

Yea I saw the memphis and was about to send photo to some folks here in memphis(I just got back from louisville) and ask them
who he was I’ve never seen him and I had made a list before we left of TN racers… Then I noticed he wasn’t in my list so double checked… Memphis IN is about 19 miles north of louisville on I-65.

more stuff up now
.

Exit 15 north of Louisville on I-65. I have driven past many times and have met up with people for group rides at a truck stop there!

good shots newbz

you are good at taking pictures
.

hahahaha thanks, lol
.

Great shots! You caught more of the human element than just getting the bike shots!

I raced so did not take shots during the race, but I did take a few in the days before of the area:

I’ve seen him in some running races here in L’ville. Definitely old skool
