Or do a lottery among IM finishers. I think that’s how Leadville does it–some qualify, and there’s another lottery among finishers. If there are 33 IM 140.6 races around the world, give away 3 spots at each one.
And maybe do it in real time. Ironman could do a random computer selection before the race, and choose, for example, finishers 383, 946, and 1723. When that finisher position is reached, Mike Reilly looks at the same screen where he gets name, age, and hometown, and says, “John Doe, you are an Ironman. And guess what, you’re going to Kona!”
Might have to tweak this somewhat to account for qualifiers and those who turn down a slot, but I think this would be a fun way to change the program. Of course, it doesn’t make up the $2.8M in lost revenue.
Leadville does not require you to be a finisher to enter their lottery. I know because I got a slot for this year. I think the fee to enter the lottery was $15 and if you were picked they automatically charged you the full entry fee. Leadville also has qualifyng slots from previous years and at some affiliated races. What you are suggesting is more like a raffle, which Leadville also offers at its qualifiers as well. I’m not opposed to your idea. I just hope that there remains a way for the average Ironman (like me) to have a chance at Kona.
