Ironman Los Cabos Participants

Anyone else noticed that they were limiting the number of participants to 1500? I just saw that now, and it’s pretty cool.
Not sure why they did that, but I won’t complain.

I am seriously considering making this my “A” race in 2014, but I am also building a posse of people to escort me. My major concern is for my personal safety and I have no intention of going somewhere that I feel unsafe for any part of the venue.

It fits nicely into my schedule and as I’ll be aging up, my chances for making the big Kona dance look good there, as long as positive race reports are published from the inaugural race…

Unless you drive to south Baja, it’s very safe. North Baja not so but south is just fine. You’re not anymore in danger than anywhere in the US. Maybe more at risk of personal belongings robbery, as is the case in Hawaii but it is very safe.

I hope this is the case…they said they would limit IMAZ to 2000 last year too but on race day they announced it was about 2700 athletes—waaaaaay too crowded.

That area is as safe as anywhere can be. It’s barely even Mexico anymore. Chances are there is higher percentage of English speakers there than in Los Angeles (it’s safer, too).

Drink bottled water, don’t eat anything raw unless YOU peel it and stay away from mild salsa.

If you’re a meat eater order beef and pork, not chicken. I eat from the street vendors, not the tourist joints. Pick the busy ones.

In CSL, if you want really good food for a pretty high price, eat at Mi Casa and/or The Trailer Park.

You’ll be fine.

Are you American? Sometimes you are so funny in the US…

I am living in Latin America (I am from Europe). I have been to most of the countries in the region and are not particular concerned about what I eat. No problems, the only place I have ever had stomach issues was in the US from eating in a restaurant in Meat Packing NYC.

Also, never felt unsafe at all. Actually felt more unsafe walking up Broadway in NYC.

I am sure you will be fine in Los Cabos…see you there

What you said! Although there are places that should be avoided in Mexico right now (I live in El Paso, right across Ciudad Juarez), Los Cabos is just fine. The course looks awesome, and I’m glad they’re limiting entries to 1500. I hope it’ll stay like that.

The people that live in Mexico can drink the water because their bodies are adjusted to it. My son is from Russia and he drank tap water there for the first year of his life. I had one glass and got violently ill. It was confirmed my illness was from the water. The very same water my infant son was drinking without issue.

BTW, he’s 8 years old now and has *never *thrown up.

The US State Department has travel advisories in effect for various parts of Mexico. There is no travel advisory for Cabo.

Sally, I live in QRoo which is on the mainland and a world away from Baja (hell, Yucatan peninsula is a world away from the bajito and much of central Mexico) but really, I’ve dragged my 4 kids through almost each and every state of Mexico and the Baja peninsula is like a different country. But I digress. Yes, there are areas here where innocents are randomly selected to become bodies and 2 prior tourist destinations (Aca and Veracruz) are outside my comfort zone to take kids, but in BCS, and ESPECIALLY Los Cabos, a very touristy area, they’re not going to pick out innocents in that golden goose. FMT (the Mexican triatlon federation) has been careful to place their events in very safe areas. Our president recently cycled on the IMCOZ bike route (and reported to hold a 30kph average for the 65km ride). What I would expect from the Los Cabos event is to find an event that is not seasoned. This will be the first year in a brand new area and I would expect wrinkles. Not complete failures, but I would expect stuff to go wrong and plan for that. But your safety really is not something you need to worry about there unless you’re poking your nose where it doesn’t belong. Don’t be too curious. Don’t take pictures of militares. Don’t investigate SUVs with dark windows. Keep your nose clean and you’ll be fine.
