Ironman Los Cabos (4)

The total entry for Ironman Los Cabos is for 750 participants and they keep 40 slots for Hawaii…wow
.

That is a wow! 1/4 a normal field size but 80% the normal slots. Though I wonder what if it’s a comparatively strong field… even then there going to be some pretty slow times on the bubble and roll downs I suspect.

This is a good moment for a rule change, where they create brackets and if the # of starters is <1000, slots drop to 30. Then reallocate slots to sold out races.

Keep in mind that’s it’s still December… it’s an October destination race… in what is now a VERY crowded part of the IM season.

I’m not sure they’ll even get the 750 participants in 2015. In 2014 they only had about that many finishers. With a 70.3 on the same day, it may likely thin out the full field a lot more. The KQ rate may be 8-10% if the 70.3 pulls enough participants away. But then again, only a few really fast guys need to show up to take those 40 spots. I’m tempted to give Cabo another shot…

Hardly a fair comparison. March 2014 vs October 2015 is a very different scenario.

Maybe, I’m just speculating. It’s still the same race and same venue. Just a different date with the additional option of a 70.3. Yes, it gives the Northern Hemisphere folks a better opportunity to train during the summer, but they also have a number of other options within weeks of this event, including Kona. In the spirit of the OP, even if it sells out at 750 slots, it sounds like a pretty good option with over 5% of the field able to KQ.

I think this race is one of the hidden gems, and I had an absolute blast racing it earlier this year. I would love to see this race do well, so I hope it’s well attended.

This is on my radar - though not for being a KQ.
If I nail my 70.3 in NOLA and feel perfect - Ill put the cash down to have this as IM 1.0

Anyone done the race before?

Any reviews or horror stories?

This is confusing…are they running a 140.6 and 70.3 simultaneously?
Course description refers only to full IM distance.
According to website 750 athletes for each distance.
Ironman World Championship says 40 slots, but title and logo shows 2015 70.3 World Championship Qualifier…??? Anybody knows the exact info?

Thank you. Now I get it…

Maybe they are leaving the # of KQ spots the same in an attempt to boost entries. I’ll bet the swim will be no-wetsuit this time of year. It was very close in 2014 and I think they fudged it because so many participants were freaking out about it in the days before the race. I’m considering doing it again depending on how my season goes. I was thinking that it won’t sell out so I can make a last minute decision.
