IM Lanzarote started a couple of hours ago, it’s still very early in the bike portion. Live updates are being posted, sounds like it’s very windy on the course (no surprise?)

Allrighhtt…!!
I’m on it, thanks for the remimder…
Thanks for the reminder. I was scanning the pics and noticed this:
Women helpers in the mens changing tent. I guess things are definitley different outside of the US. I personally would not mind but I wonder how men in the US wold react to that or how women would react to male volunteers in the womens changing tent.
I was scanning the pictures and noticed this:
Richard Ferron, of this parish!
340 Richard Ferron CAN 30-34 01:13:19 06:40
Let’s see how he goes on what is shaping up to be a hot and windy day in LAnzarote. In other words, normal for there!
Good Luck, Richard.
anyone for a bet on whether speedy legs Schellens (2h36’ in Almere off the bike) will catch Liebetrau and Juhanson
.
Steffen Liebetrau 2. Ain-Alar Juhanson 1:46 3. Gerrit Schellens 5:13
“anyone for a bet on whether speedy legs Schellens (2h36’ in Almere off the bike) will catch Liebetrau and Juhanson”
It could happen! Although, the two bikes courses are very different and the effect on the legs could be very different too.
but at the start of the run schellens was 23’ back!
"Gerrit Schellens must have rocket fuel in his water bottles … for the run, anyway!
(He needs to use the same stuff on the bike, then he wouldn’t have to run so hard!)
With one lap of running to go, he is just five minutes behind Liebetrau!
He’s made up 16 minutes in just under 20 miles of running!"

That was posted 16 minutes ago on the race site so they must have less than 10k to go by now. It’s going to be close.
anybody know what happened th Kai Huntermarck??
I was training in Lanzarote till Thursday and managed to pick a race guide, they had him as one to watch and I thought he would be but Ive seen or heard nothing on IM live???
I just searched his name on the results/update spreadsheet and there is nothing under the speelling you gave. I guess he didn’t toe the line.
I just checked the race programme and I spelt it wrong!!!
The correct spelling is Kai Hundertmarck, he was down to be pro race number 9, he’s the former team telekom and motorola pro cyclist
Yeah, I know the name and his background, but there is nothing there under that either. I know he posts here sporadically, you could pm he, I think he posts under Kai.
Congratulations to Richard Ferron on completing a hard day in the heat and wind of Lanzarote.
Richard Ferron CAN 30-34 340 01:13:19 06:40 241 06:42:20 04:21 156 04:03:21 12:09:59
A solid performance.
Thanks Julian!
That was a hell of a race! I never though I would one day race a 180k bike course over 6h. 6h40, that was long(my other IM was 5h15, total 10h28)…but I wouldn’t have gone faster. Wind and hills combined…well. Had some stomach problem at the beginning of the run but it got ok after 15 min of walking so I could run the rest.
I’ll try to post a full race coverage at the end of the week.
All in all, not the time I would have expected but with the race being Lanzarote and with the hard conditions, I’m really happy with my race.
Well done, Richard. Sounds as though you came through injuryfree. Lanxarote is not the place to go if you expect a pb. It’s not appreciated Stateside (continent of N. America ;-)) how difficult a course it is, but it does have beautiful views if you can look around and see them, especially Mirador del Rio. How much longer are you on the island for your R & R?
By the way, it’s not the best picture to critique my position but it’s a Tom D signed fitting!
Thanks again Tom, it helped with the #%&#/"% wind.
Have a safe flight back to ? Either home to Canada or straight back to work. I’ll look forward t oreading that race report.
I’m leaving tomorrow for 2 nights in Madrid so I’ll be back at work on thursday where I will hopefully have time to do my race report
Before the race I asked my fellow canadian Gillian Baker (finished twice 2nd here in Lanzarote an 6th this year…was sick) why the weren’t more pros racing here and she simply said : "too tough. They want to do good times and they wont here. That goes for the AG too. "
The course is really fantastic. It’s true it is hard but hey, isn’t it the reason why we do Ironman’s? You should look at the number of DNF, that tells a bit about the course.
And, like you said, Mirador Del Rio…Wow! Spectacular!
Kai Huntermack??? was\a drop out before the race due to injury, according to Kenneth Gasque the race director,
Richard top performance that was a hell of a day, I was almost an hour slower than the last time in Grotty but then again with an average temp of 28 deg C and the max temp recorded on the run course at 39 deg C , what else did I expect…oops forgot about the wind.
Shoulders and arms are a fantastic shade of red
