Ironman goal finish time?

The Marathon goal time seems to be sub 3. The 5K goal time seems to be sub 18. What is the goal everyone is trying for in the Ironman?

Thanks!

Sub 10hrs

Sub 11 - I’m being sorta realistic

For my first, which is Ironman Florida this year, to finish under 17 hours. My training and mathmatics tell me I should be between 12-13 hours but a qualified finish is the goal.

Though I’ve never done an IM, and haven’t done a half in 3 years, it seems like this is probably the approach that is least likely to end up with you in the ER.

It’s so course dependent. I go 9:20 at IMAZ, 9:40 at Kona, would likely go sub 9:15 at IMFL but maybe 9:35 at IMSG there is no magic number.

Did you not read the first post or just not understand it?
But either way, congrats on breaking out the rulers.

To finish, then to PR, then to Qualify. Depends on YOUR life and circumstances and time and talent and motivation.

Agreed ian10!

X2 on Sub-10, but I do agree with Bryan that it is course dependant. Same thing goes for the marathon though and the magic number is sub-3. You are the beholder of where you race, find a fast course if going Sub-10 is your goal, find a race like Korea, or China if you want to qualify for Kona. In my opinion there is a lot that you are in control of to meet your goals, but on the other hand there are a lot of things that are out of your control, you just have to roll with the punches and prepare the best you can. (guess I got a little off topic there  )

12 hours would be my ultimate right now but finishing under 17 works.

I feel like finishing under 17 is kinda like doing a 5-5:30 hour marathon (oprah, puffy). Sub 13 is kinda like a sub 4 marathon. Sub 10 is more like a sub 3 hour marathon. And finally, Sub 9 is like a sub 2.5 hour marathon.

For your 1st one…just finish and try to enjoy the vibe and learn all you can. Take in every moment from registration to picking up your stuff the day after the race. Pay special attention to volunteers and those who came to cheer you on. If you decide to do future full distance races, apply your learning and start to set goal times…whatever they may be.

Depends on how old you are.

What do you think??

Sub 17 is more like 5:30-6:00 hr marathon even longer. Anybody who can walk a marathon can finish in sub 17 hrs…
BTW for the posters who thinks 17 hour is the only time cut in the world:
Roth has 15 hours and some other European races including Ironman Frankfurt has 16 hours time cut-offs.

I was thinking a sub 10 would be the goal that “everyone” would love to see…

I would be very happy with a sub 11 hour race in Lanzaroti in 2012.
If I had no kids and a flexible lifestyle I would really want to go sub 10 but that would mean putting in way way more time in training than I am able to now.
1 hour swim I could do (a little extra training required here)
5 hour bike leg, I could do but this would require (I think) an extra 4 - 6 hours a week of bike training with some guidance (interval work etc etc).
3:30 marathon at the end …thats going to take some working on!! my open marathon is 3:20 but I always always struggle in the IM marathon section, normally my guts are the worst thing! Yesterday I did:
1:07 swim (felt great)
5:50 bike (felt low on energy and my guts were not great…totally my own fault for not putting time in on the bike)
4:15 marathon (almost quit at 10k but then picked it up and ran a steady slow slow pace).

agree, although my plan is never to do an ironman
