Does anyone who’s been/going to Ironman Germany have any reccommendations on staying in Frankfurt? I just don’t fancy shelling out a small fortune on hotels if I can help it…

hi,
most of the hotels in the downtown area will be quite expensive. Your best bet is to go a little farther out of town, and look for smaller places to stay. Staying out of town is OK as long as you remain near public transit, meaning trains. I think that last year an IMG entry automaticly included a pass to the train system.
In Europe many restaurants/pubs have a few rooms over the main restaurant. Comfort and service will be much more basic, but they will be clean. Frankfurt Information, which should have offices in the train station and the airport, should be able to help you. Most of the smaller places, especially outside of the center of Frankfurt, are probably not on the Internet.
Still, there is no harm in trying www.frankfurt.de . Just tried the site and Hotel Reservations does not seem to be working in either English or German, but it might/should during the week.
good luck,
Jim
Thanks Jim,
I’ll take that advice.
I´ve found an example. www.gehspitze.de
this is in Karben, about 20km outside of Frankfurt. About half way round the bike course, perhaps a little further. The hotel is on an intersection and the bike course turns right at this intersection. The local 25m indoor pool is about 200m away, and the train station about 600m away.
From the price list:
single without shower Euro 25
double without shower Euro 40
single with shower Euro 30
double with shower Euro 45
single with shower and toilette 48
double with shower and toilette 73.
this is obviously not the standard that you can find in Frankfurt, but is certainly a lot cheaper. I doubt that you can improve on these prices much, but there should be lots of other hotels about at a similar price level. Some should be closer to Frankfurt.
You can find this place on the map by looking at www.map24.de Enter the full address including PLZ - 61184 - and it will be shown on the map. You can zoom the map in and out.
This place is served by the Frankfurt train system and is about 30-35 minutes from the center of Frankfurt.
good luck.
Jim
Although I agree with the idea to stay outside the city of Frankfurt, Karben is in the wrong direction and about an hour from the swim start. You would want to be south of the city. Try and find a place in Langen. Here is a hotel with a room available for that weekend. Hotel Steigenberger Maxx
Robert-Bosch-Str. 26, 63225 Langen
Date Rate description Price * - guaranteed in billing currency (EUR - Euro) Breakfast per person and night from 2004-07-09 to 2004-07-12 Wochenend-Rate 1 SGL 57.00 per Night
You can also try Neu Isenburg, Dreieich-Buchschlag, or Darmstadt…which are on the same train line. Check out www.bahn.de for the train routes and surrounding hotels.
I live about 12 kilometers from the start and will be racing. So, feel free to contact me if I can asnwer any questions.

Hi Andy,
I will also do IM Frankfurt and try to qualify. 2002, 2003, hope I’ll make it this year.
I am again staying with friends in kronenberg. But on the saturday some of my friends from Holland will come to Frankfurt to watch the race on sunday. Do you perhaps know if there is a campingsite somewhere Frankfurt?

P.S. last weekend I did 1/2 IM Nieuwkoop in NL. More and more Cervelo-bikes appear in the euro-triscene.
Lots of them in the PF.
hi Jeb,
if you look on the IMG website http://www.ironman-germany.com/english/ under FAQ it states that camping is possible at the Rebstock Gelände. This is a few km west of the city center.
