Lionel Sanders Ironman debut pulls out the win on a race that the swim was cancelled. Has to be a little deflating to put in that effort and win by 20 mins and possibly feeling like it wasn’t a true race. Not that he could control that. Anyone experience this and how did you feel after the race. Must be disappointing for the strong swimmers.
His performance today was well above anyone else. From my perspective it wouldn’t have mattered if there was a swim or not he still would have won. Perhaps with the swim his margin of victory may have been a little less, but none the less he would have won. Pretty impressive for his first kick at the can.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Just wondering if some people like Starky will say that it wasn’t a true win since they didn’t swim. I can already see the comments coming from them saying stuff like it was only a duathlon. Lionel would have only given back a couple minutes on the swim and still would have won by a large margin.

He won today fair and square, and while I am pretty sure he’d have won with a swim, we don’t really know and he actually has to do it…there is still a big diff between a 7 and 8 hour race and the swim can mess up a lot of digestive systems when having to put away 400 calories per hour…so, he won and really ripped it up. I’d love to see him go down to Melbourne in March and take the win there which would make people worry a lot. But neither the 4:12 bike nor 2:44 run will have anyone panicking YET as others have gone in that combo range with a swim in front.
I wonder if he will decide to show up in Arizona and milk this build for a head on collision with some of the post Kona crew
By the way I don’t think we need spoiler on this…it’s not like anyone is recording from Eurosport or ESPN…speaking of Euosport, they have live coverage of the World Marathon Majors.
Besides there is a thread titled “IM Florida swim cancelled” on the first page so… Well…
