This is terrible news for me. I’m signed up for IM Jacksonville but I can’t eat or drink anything that contains sucralose. It triggers migraines. The on-course fluids will be useless to me.

Come on. You have to work really hard to take on too many carbs. Like, feel stuffed and bloated and keep going. Yes, it’s possible to over do it. Poll every single Ironman finisher and DnFer and I bet the vast majority could take on more carbs than they did.
It’s pretty hard to OD on carbs if they had Gatorade quantities (48g/800ml).
IMUK 2006 - second year at Sharborne did accidentally have diet coke instead of sugar coke. There was no comms on that at all. Was just a stuff up.
IMNZ 2015 I think it was had big vats for the ‘Horleys’ energy drink. But nothing to let the volunteers stir it. So as mentioned, all we got was pretty much water and so almost all the field bonked second lap of the bike and then the run was a mess.
My first couple of IM then I did the self supported apart from water. And they have been the ones where my race went closest to ‘plan’. My intent is very much to get back to that approach, and currently working with a sports nutritionist to trial some approaches and really tie that down. And it’s way way easier to do that nowadays - also way more expensive. There are so many more products to provide the almost unique mix of carbs and electolytes for us, and also to be able to carry on modern bikes vs 20 years back.
At least they haven’t gone to Coke Zero yet ![]()
I’d maybe use them to plug a radiator leak.
I guess that is a positive ![]()
Now I’ve basically got to self support the entire race. The gels won’t be a problem but drinking anything other than water will.
