The scale is essentially a 0 to 5 scale, with 5 being the lowest. Try to imagine the climb based on the stats they provide along with it – you gain ~100 feet over the course of 0.7 miles. Shouldn’t be too bad, it’s just barely enough to be considered a climb.
I don’t use mapmyride so I can’t help you out there, but I have ridden the IMChoo course and there aren’t any tough climbs. Lots of rollers so the elevation adds up, but no tough climbs. I was in my big ring most of the time.
If you’re volunteering so you can register, if you can you should ride the course while you’re there. That should answer any questions you have about gearing.
Never use mapmyride for elevation, it’s terrible. I’ve ridden the course several times and parts of it many times. Don’t worry about it. If you’ve put in the miles before hand it won’t be an issue. If you want to see a tough ride in Chattanooga, try the 3 State / 3 Mountain Challenge. You’ll laugh the next time someone asks you how tough the IM course is. The run is much more of an issue in my opinion. Parts of North Chattanooga is tough. The Scenic City Half Marathon which is on February 22nd covers a lot of the IM run course if you are interested.
I drove it over Christmas, didn’t have time to ride it. There are no serious climbs nothing like the waterfront tri. It’s very much just a rolling course, going to be a nice bike leg.
I, like yourself signed up to volunteer for Chatt. For Christmas I asked my wife for and received a DVD of the bike course put out by http://tricoursehd.com/
For the money I’m very satisfied. Great pic quality, shows elevation change as you progress thru the vid and the background music is pretty good .
I thought about being a catcher for last shift but instead picked run water station # 10 .
Here’s one example. There’s still not many activities on Garmin that are public that show the entire course. Either that or Garmin’s search is terrible (very possible).
Last I looked, Ironman.com also had the Louisville bike course as having 2000 ft elev gain. Go ride it and tell me if you agree with it being a flat course (which is what 2000 ft over 112 miles would be). Louisville is closer to 5,000 ft elev gain. Many times, the measurements given by Ironman.com, are half the amount (and sometimes more) of what they should be
10-4 but I also found the course on mapmyrun, it shows only 256ft on gain there! Has anybody ran a loop with a garmin to verify the actual elevation change.
Sorry, but right now I don’t think that it is a tough course…

It’s changed once or twice. if you’re looking at the one where a lot of it is along the river, then yes that’s flat. once you get off the river its hilly. I dont believe a thing mapmyrun tells me. it told me that a sprint I was doing had 100ft of climbing over the course of the bike, in reality I crested 100ft hills a couple times plus the rest of the ride.
The run isnt going to be incredibly difficult, but if you try and convince yourself its pancake flat then you’re in for a walkathon.
Found this on Strava this morning conducting a search for the IM Chat Run course +700 ft. The decieving part is there are 2-3 mile sections in town that are flat with the Northern section posing a challenge.
